Just in case you were still tap, tap, tapping your fingers in anticipation of what Sen. Larry Craig would decide to do about his scandal-ridden Senate career, the wait is over: Craig has changed his mind about resigning and will remain in the Senate through next year. He made his decision this afternoon, shortly after a Minnesota judge ruled Craig could not withdraw his guilty plea to disorderly conduct in a men's restroom at a Minnesota airport.
"I have seen that it is possible for me to work here effectively,'' Craig said in a written statement. He also indicated that when his term expires next year, he will retire and not seek re-election.
Idaho Republican Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter had issued a statement earlier, immediately after Judge Charles Porter of the Hennepin County District Court dismissed Craig's arguments, saying that he was ready to name a Republican successor to complete Craig's six-year term, had he chosen to resign.
Reuters has Republican aides saying there are no plans to again try to push Craig out, and there was no way to force him to leave.

Ugh. First the SCHIP comment this morning, now this. I like DCist better when it's not trying to be Wonkette. What the hell does this have to do with local DC affairs?
Funny how the Republicans aren't calling for Senator Vitter to resign. After all, he actually paid for sex and committed adultery while campaigning on a 'family values' moral restriction platform.
Could it perhaps just maybe just a little bit be about the fact that Vitter's seat would go to a Democrat? Oh, and the fact that the sex wasn't gay?
The stench of double standards must be almost unbearable under the Republican big top these days.
Ugh. I really wish he would just resign. He would do the Republicans a huge favor, and shame on them for not pressing for his resignation.
Aq: Ensign just said for Craig to resign. I would guess McConnell will soon enough but since he's the leader of the Republican party in the Senate he'll probably do that at some big news conference.
I think the Republicans were trying to be kind to Craig and let him step down on his own terms. Since he's not doing that I would imagine the gloves are off and Republicans will be all over him to get out. Remember its been all of what ... 9 or 10 hours on a Thursday. I doubt many senators are even around to comment.
MS, I think you are right. The news is starting to report on that.
This man has issues, and what he needs is a mental evaluation.
That "stench" from the Republicans isn't double-standards, it's Senator Vitter's soiled diapers.
Somebody needs to tell his mommy that he made a boom-boom.
I guess they better post more guards at the union station restrooms.
the less issue of Craig the better...
he has lost credibility
but heck
he is a republican
in my mind there are very few of them with credibility anyhow
for a minute there the republicans were trying to use craig as a sacrificial lamb
offering him up
to make them appear to be of some great moral standard
just like the res
crooked like a senator
and I am not talking about the bend of his staff

Good try #9. Becuase so many Dems have credibility these days. It the person, not the party in this instance. BUt hey, good try nonetheless.
Just saw that Rep. Pete Hoekstra came out against Craig. I would guess after the long weekend we will see a bunch more.
So far it's John Ensign and Pete Hoekstra but I would guess that the Republican leadership (Ensign is part of that) will condemn Craig soon.
The problem is Craig officially admitted he was guilty, voluntarily signed paperwork TWO MONTHS LATER to that effect, paperwork says he should not sign if he feels he really is innocent & wants to contest in court. Now he complains he was bullied into signing that - uh, 2 months later??? Some excuse - he admitted guilt to keep everything a secret!
Delay, the guy who pursued male interns, brothel Vitter, Ney, Craig - ANOTHER EXAMPLE WHY THE REPUGS ARE THE PARTY OF CORRUPTION !
