Manholes, Ahoy

UPDATE: NBC4 has their videos stupidly set to play automatically every time you refresh the page, so we moved the embedded video as a courtesy to our readers. If you'd like to see the video, you can follow this link or see it embedded below the fold. Photo above is by Bullneck.

DCist has a long and well documented irrational fear of manhole mishaps, so we thought we'd better share the glorious terror of this NBC4 video of yesterday's manhole fire in the 1100 block of Pennsylvania Ave. NW, which happened just before 2 p.m. Thankfully, no one was injured in the explosion, and authorities investigating the scene managed to get the street reopened after a few hours. Yolanda Lee uploaded this video to nbc4.com.

Yeah, uh, could you please not embed videos that automatically download content and play?

Don't be so hard on yourselves...based on that video (and previous incidents), I'd say it's hardly an "irrational" fear.

This thing spewed out smoke and flames for a good 15 minutes, with flames shooting up a good 6 feet in the air. The constant explosions caused the windows in the nearby buildings to rattle.

Totally unfazed by this spectacle, several pedestrians continued to walk right up to the inferno to cross the street, until stopped by police directing traffic!

I'm in agreement with the first comment - no embeded videos which play automatically, please. For those of us reading DCist in an office environment, we need to be able to pick and choose when and if we watch videos.

aids cannon yeah, I agree, it's really annoying. I don't think there's a way for me to turn that feature off so I may just have to take it down...

I am disappointed that DC is not exploiting the tourism potential of this regular phenomenon.

DC would put warning signs around Old Faithful: "Keep Out - Live Steam."

Maybe just place the video after the jump?

If I've said it once, I've said it thousand times: this city needs to launch a fire safety program for the CHUD people who live in our sewers. Lives are at stake, Mayor Fenty!

And I've said it a thousand times: those CHUDs are lawyers that were flushed down DC toilets when they were young. But now they're back, and this time...

It's personal.

I look forward to more examples of DC's unique, geothermic features; even the sulfuric stench was very geyser-like!

Sommer, thank you for putting the video behind the jump, that's much better.

Thanks for the feedback about the autoplay of the video. This is Veeker (the service that NBC uses for their UGC videos and pictures)and we have made the changes necessary so the video will not automatically play anymore. Any other feedback please direct them to Veeker.com and we would be more than happy to look into it.

Thanks
