D.C. Council members Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) and Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7) announced the creation of the Poplar Point Coalition over the weekend, just days before the RFEI's are due from developers for interest in the 130 acre site known as Poplar Point. The announcement comes as tension has been building between the DC United owner, Victor MacFarlane, Ward 8 Council member Marion Barry, and Mayor Fenty. Several months ago a disagreement over total figures between Fenty and MacFarlane led the mayor to announce the opening for bidding from developers for the site despite years of negotiations between MacFarlane, Barry and Fenty.
Now MacFarlane has taken the opposition to another level by announcing his intent to begin looking for possible stadium sites outside the city boundaries, an act that is nothing short of explicit defiance. It seems as though the creation of the coalition yesterday comes just days before of the deadline for RFEI proposals (Oct. 19) and MacFarlane's new site search, possibly to hasten the parting of ways for MacFarlane and D.C.

I doubt the forming of the coalition was timed to hasten the parting of ways between McFarlane and D.C. Barry, et al, are all for the DC United proposal. In fact, Mayor Barry has intimated that the Ward 8 community will stand in the way of any other proposals.
Not all Ward 8 residents are against development in our part of the city. It sucks that the general stereotype seems to point that we don't want something to better our current infrastructure and neighborhood.
I wouldnt say thats the stereotype at all. It seems like many residents in Ward 8 are open and supportive for investing in the area and with political representation like Barry and Alexander your voices are sure to be heard.
i'd recommend a little copy editing before publishing articles. you mention the timing with regards to the RFEIs TWICE within a few lines of each other
In the article you state that Fenty was engaged in these negotiations for years. Is that even possible? Didn't he just become mayor this January? Was he engaged in negotiation while on the council? Who has been negotiating? Did they have the blessing of this administration or Anthony Williams?
My reference to Fenty was in fact in references to negotiations with the previous two Mayors...to my understanding possibly beginning with Barry.
