The Weekly Feed: Iron-Clad Edition

Allez Cuisine!
From Jack Abramoff's Signatures to his own restaurant, Farrah Olivia, Morou Ouattara plans to step into a new venue. His eye is on Kitchen Stadium as he competes for the title of the Next Iron Chef. The first episode airs Sunday, 9 p.m. on the Food Network.

Eight chefs with the help of Lufthansa Airlines (yay product placement!) will be traveling through Europe and competing against each other to join Mario Batali, Cat Cora, Bobby Flay and Masuharu Morimoto as an Iron Chef. Despite Alton Brown's denials, this sounds like the Food Network's response to Bravo's Top Chef, only with tonier sponsors.

I'm a little nervous about our hometown boy's chances. He went up against Bobby Flay in the battle of the frozen peas and lost. (They're re-airing the episode a few times this weekend.) But he does have one huge advantage; he would bring a unique type of cuisine to the show with his repertoire of African/Middle Eastern/French fusion. Everyone else will be doing the same old French and Modern American cuisines of the other chefs. I hope they let him bring some of his own arsenal, which includes unique spices like dried escargot, alligator pepper, and bacon powder (Mmm... bacon... ).

Wisdom for SE
Wisdom, a new bar hoping to open by next summer in Hill East, is already off to a great start with its neighbors. Owner Eric Holzherr, an Air Force officer, is working on getting a liquor license with the local ANC. Tentative plans are for an upscale martini lounge serving tapas and appetizers. He hopes to add outdoor seating, and eventually serve as a tea house during the day with brunch on the weekends. Wisdom is definitely a cool new addition to the neighborhood.

Small Bites
Taste of Bethesda
Try out various offerings from Bethesda restaurants. Taste of Bethesda is back this Saturday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. in Woodmont Triangle. Make sure to save your tickets for some of the heftier items, to get the biggest bang for your buck. Hot spots include Passage to India, Penang, and Chesapeake Chicken and Rockin' Ribs.

Prost!
It's that sweet, sweet time of year, Oktoberfest - two weeks of drinking debauchery that celebrated the marriage of German King Ludwig I to Princess Therese of Bavaria. Mmm... beer and pretzels. The Express has a roundup of places where you can get your drink on. My favorite, "Don't Hassel the Hof Brau Fest" at Rustico.

Watch your food aura
One of my new favorite blogs, Food Karma Alert from Cory, a DC-area food chemistry PhD, discusses all the latest news in food policy. He's covered topics from the dangers of Nalgene bottles and popcorn lung to eating local and proper food labeling. Even more he offers advice on how to enact change. Most sites out there seem a little paranoid and alarmist, but Cory's chemistry background makes him the real deal.

Um. Any hints on where Wisdom will be? No street address was given.

Sorry, it's at 1432 Pennsylvania Ave. SE =D

Thanks for the plug Jamie! Much appreciated. There's so much going on with our food these days --- and we're definitely at a pivotal time with regard to creating a sustainable food supply. So, I'm just trying to get the info out there and let people know about ways that we can let our voices be heard! All the best, Cory

So did anyone watch Iron Chef last night? Morou looks like he has a chance, and actually seems like a nice guy (in general, the low contingent of jackasses was promising, if slightly dull television). Odds seem on the blonde chick or the New Orleans guy, after the first ep, but it's way early to tell.
