Dalai Lama Headed Back to D.C.

2007_1010_dalailama.jpgThe last time the Dalai Lama was in Washington, not even spiritual enlightenment could help him figure out why District residents still lacked voting rights. And now that he's coming back, maybe he'll have a little word with President Bush and Congressional Republicans about it.

Tibet's exiled spiritual leader will be in town next week to accept a Congressional Gold Medal. The medal, which accompanies a resolution passed last year that recognizes him as "a leading figure of moral and religious authority," will be presented during a ceremony attended by Bush, representing the first time a sitting U.S. president has met the Dalai Lama in public.

Maybe he can use his moral and religious authority to remind Bush that 206 years of disenfranchisement for the District's residents is a little too long. Heck, maybe we can even get him to go on some lobbying visits.

I suppose that every dcist article from here on out will somehow reference the voting rights issue.

"Mysterious pooper pooping all over the District. Maybe he's pooping for DC Voting Rights!"

cold chillin'

love that picture!

Isn't the the showcard from His Holiness’ stand-up act? Great sense of humor for a vegetarian.

I think that's from his first album: "MC Karma: Gotama Gonna F**k Yo A$$ up!"

BosttonRay: If another possible non-citizen illegal alien is the best poster you can come up with as an advocate for voting rights it is well past time to park the car in the garage (LOL). And a lame vegan at that! Where or where are the Republicans? - Bill O'Rielly or Rush Limbaugh could actually help you.

The Dalai Lama is coming back to DC and all you can write about are DC voting rights? Myopic, much? How about us supporting him in being able to return to his country? Geez.

Seriously DCist, how about some perspective?

Why not focus on how China is destroying Tibet's heritage and history (after long ago destroying its sovereignty) through massive relocations of Chinese into Tibet, and destroying Tibetan Buddhism by having the Chinese government appoint the hierarchy of religious officials (as though the Godless Chinese commies will better be able to identify the reincarnated panchen and dalai lamas than, say, people who actually believe that religion.)

Gyaicain Norbu my ass, fucking commies.

I gotta back up TLB on this one.

While I'm all for voting rights back home, I hope his holiness uses his time with Prez Bush to highlight the on-going rape of Tibet, and the destruction of centuries of culture and society there.

Not like Bush will actually give two sh*ts about it, tho....

Oh get over yourselves. Not everything written about the Dalai Lama has to have Free Tibet! plastered all over it, and it's not like DCist's failure to highlight the issue makes any difference.

Shut the fuck up Politburo - WTF is the point of a post about the Dalai Lama that deals with DC voting rights? GET OVER IT. DC RESIDENTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO HAVE A VOTING MEMBER OF THE HOUSE UNLESS A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT IS PASSED. That isn't going to happen any time soon.

So just move to NoVA already and quit bitching. Taxes are lower there anyway.

Wow. Calm down, guys.

The reason I focused on the Dalai Lama and voting rights is because the last time he was here, he commented on it. So, there is some relevance to the cause.

Anyone else getting a bit tired of this guy's act? I am no Buddhist, but always thought a tennant of most religions was humility (I know, for example, that the bible says "Blessed are the meek").

Alos, who pays for this guy's whirlwind travels? I assume the Richard Geres of the world are the financial backer, but wouldn't their money do more good actually helping the people of places like Tibet and Burma rather than providing their leader with a lifetime membership to the cocktail party circuit?
