Where Do You Go With a Stolen Gas Tanker?

2007_1019_gastruck%282%29.jpgThe Associated Press is reporting that a dark cherry red Peterbilt tanker truck hauling gasoline was stolen at gunpoint this morning in Baltimore. ABC News follows up with word that police believe it to be a straight-up robbery and not connected to terrorism in any way, but that the Joint Terrorism Task Forces from Washington and Baltimore are assisting local Police in the investigation as a precaution.

The suspect was last seen driving the truck toward an I-95 on-ramp, so law enforcement agencies throughout the I-95 corridor have been alerted. Hiding a truck that big, and trying to unload that much stolen gasoline, seems like a feat and a half. It might be worth a lot of money, but if it's really only a criminal operation, this certainly smells like a case of a pretty dumb, or desperate, plan.

The truck's Maryland license plate is 436-F45 and the tanker has Maine license plate 126-8185. Anyone with information is asked to call the police.

UPDATE: The AP reports the truck has been found, parked on South Capital Street in Southwest D.C. So apparently the answer to our question of where you go with a stolen tanker is to dump it as soon as you can and hope the police don't find your fingerprints.

The WTOP/AP link above has been updated to say it was found on South Capitol St.

Wow. They made it almost 50 miles without getting caught? Isn't this part of the I-95 riddled with troopers and cops looking for drug smugglers?

Amazing that they made it down I-95 without detection (seriously - full of troopers, traffic was probably slow, etc). But what's even more amazing is that the truck, which was reported to be carrying over 7,000 gallons of fuel, was found empty.

Where/how the hell does one dump 7,000+ gallons of fuel on the sly?!?

Hasn't anyone ever seen The Road Warrior? This is the clearest sign yet of the apocalypse. Only thing left to do is stock up on ammunition and get lasik.

See, it seems less Road Warrior and more Escape from Manhattan to me. Or maybe Night of the Comet... all we need are a few brain-eating zombies, and we're almost there. We have the truck cab protection, after all.

I can see 50 years in the future some grandfather is going to be telling his grandkids one hell of a joyride story.
