Anthony Bourdain Hearts Ben's Chili Bowl

2007_1108_bourdain.jpgSo where does Anthony Bourdain – chef, writer, traveler - spend his night after bumping elbows with six of D.C.’s top chefs? Unsurprisingly, at Ben’s Chili bowl.

Keeping true to his inclinations for “adventurous” eating, Anthony Bourdain visited famed Ben’s Chili Bowl Tuesday night after having MC’ed D.C.’s annual Capital Food Fight.

“I loved it, it’s the kind of food I like,” responded Bourdain to a question during the Q&A session of his sold-out talk at Lisner Auditorium Wednesday night. “There’s something about ground mystery meat sitting under a burner at a suspect temperature,” said Bourdain, adding that to eat like him, one must love, “… spending quality time in the bathroom.”

Bourdain’s lecture, presented by the Smithsonian, was part of a promotional tour for his new book No Reservations: Around the World on an Empty Stomach.

Dressed in his signature tight jeans and pointed cowboy boots and dropping half a dozen F-bombs, a trio of Rachael Ray jokes, and a smattering of other curse words, Bourdain gave the crowd the persona they had come to adore, but unfortunately not much else.

Photo of Bourdain from his website.

Much of his talk was spent showing clips from his popular Travel Channel show, No Reservations, while gushing adorations for foreign food cultures and haranguing the sad state of food in America. Fast food culture, the organic/cruelty-free food craze, Food Network chefs, and truffle oil were among his targets. However, for anyone who remotely follows Bourdain’s shows, books, or various website posts, he shared very little new or exciting.

When asked to comment on the D.C. food scene specifically, Bourdain noted the influx of great chefs into the area as well as those who have laid footprints in our area, including Jose Andres, Michel Richard, and Jean-Louis Paladin. Summing up his thoughts, he said, “It’s getting good.”

Perhaps Bourdain was just a bit cranky from taking care of his new daughter or recently having quit his notable chain smoking, but one noteworthy point that I took away from last night: “When faced with a charging Rachael Ray, you need to take her down in one shot.”

Book promo tours are about as glamorous as lighting farts. It's like that scene from Fight Club. You wake up at Seatac, SFO, LAX. You wake up at O'Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth, BWI. Pacific, mountain, central. Lose an hour, gain an hour. And you get bombarded with the same litany of questions, town after town after town. Of course, it's going to make you bitchy.

But he really does need a new target for his spleen. Hating on Rachel Ray is kinda tiresome.

I am offended Bob Kinkead was not mentioned in his list of chefs.

Or the fact Eric Ripert doesnt make the list

While I'm an admitted Bourdain-lover and I disagree about your assessment of the talk, I have to ask, were you even there? Someone asked if he was at Ben's Tuesday night and he stated, quite clearly, that no he wasn't but he has been and loves it very much.

Granted I was quite drunk but that was all in the spirit of Bourdain.

DJGroovySlug - In fact, I was the one who asked that question since he hadn't mentioned anything specific about D.C. dining. From where I stood, I did not hear Bourdain deny going to Ben's Tuesday night. If he stated it clearly, I must have missed it or he was drowned out.

Anthony Bourdain is fine. It's the people in this town that go to see him that are slowly causing me to lose faith in humanity.

Big L - Though Eric Ripert was not mentioned at the talk, Bourdain at his restaurant before the Capital Food Fight

I love Bourdain! My wife has a big time dislike of him. Probably cause my viewing is getting to be like some cult like love affair with him.

I will second what djgroovyslug said. Bourdain said he loved Ben's Chili Bowl but said he was not able to make it there Tuesday night.

As for the talk, I thought it was great. I am not really sure what else he could have given his fans, especially since such a large portion was Q&A where he responded to what they wanted to know.

While the quote about the type of food at Ben's chili Bowl is correct, he said he had NOT been there the night before.

I also agree that I enjoyed the evening. I found the Q&A more intriguing than the clips, however. I am a huge fan of Bourdain and watch his show - and I did not feel like anything he talked about after the clips was news to any true fan. The Q&A, however, did prove to unveil some new things. I liked his hangover cure...
