Morning Roundup: In the Line of Duty Edition

2007_1112_MR%282%29.jpgGood morning, D.C. The federal government is observing Veteran's Day today, which means Washington is much quieter than normal this morning. The chilly, wet weather certainly isn't helping make the work day, for those of us who are at our desks, any more inviting. Keep in mind that post offices, banks, schools and local government offices are closed for the day as well.

Coal Train Clean-up Continues: Workers are still out cleaning up the site of the coal train derailment that occurred on a bridge over the Anacostia River on Friday. The Post reported yesterday that the CSX-operated train is believed to have rolled onto an out of service bridge because an operator failed to secure the brakes properly. The bridge then collapsed under the train. Clean-up is expected to take several days, with the environmental impact still unclear.

Court Could Decide Tuesday About Handgun Case: The AP has a story this morning in expectation of tomorrow's Supreme Court session, which could include an announcement about whether the court will take the case reviewing the District's 31-year ban on handguns. DCist took a closer look at what the case could mean earlier this month.

Briefly Noted: D.C. Police investigating two shootings overnight ... Fire at National Zoo causes minor damages, no injuries ... DNC Meeting moved to Tysons Corner ... One man killed, one wounded in Takoma Park shooting.

This Day in DCist: In 2004 we looked back at times in history when veterans have marched on the capital and searched for the elusive doner kebab.
