We're pleased to congratulate the winners of the first ever WalkingTown DC Photo Contest, sponsored by DCist and Cultural Tourism DC. On September 29, the staff behind the twice yearly free walking tour weekends challenged local photographers to come out to their event and snap photos that best captured the spirit of WalkingTown, and then judged the entries to pick their top three.

First place winner: David Pike won for his "walk on" shot (above), which they found to be both funny and also symbolic of the event. David's photo will appear in the upcoming "See DC... Beyond the Monuments" brochure, which identifies cultural institutions throughout nine DC neighborhoods located beyond the National Mall. Cultural Tourism DC will print 200,000 copies of the brochure and distribute it to museums and tourist information centers around the city. David also received a voucher for five Washington Walks tours. Washington Walks is a supporter of WalkingTown DC and donates their tours to the event.

Second place: Allison Kirsch took second for her shot of tour guide Byron Peck and a WalkingTown DC participant taking a look at a mural on his "Shaw/U Street Mural tour." They liked the way both were shielding the sun from their eyes, and how they framed the mural. Also, you get a glimpse of the WalkingTown DC logo on the back of Byron's shirt. Allison received two tickets to the Woolly Mammoth Theatre company, for any performance this season.

Third place: Janet Wamsley took the honors for her shot of the Georgetown tour. This tour is always popular (also a Washington Walks tour) and usually turns out numbers around 200 people for one tour. They like that it showed the large number in the long line of people, and also the leafy, green side of D.C. Janet received two tickets to the International Spy Museum.
