This Week in Jazz
>> Tonight, head over to Twins Jazz to check out New York's Mark Feldman (violin) and Sylvie Courvoisier (piano) as they team up for an evening of experimental jazz. Feldman has recorded with artists as diverse as John Zorn and They Might Be Giants while Courvoisier has worked with a number of notable European artists. >> Most of you will be stuffing your faces with Turkey Day treats tomorrow, but if you happen to be looking for something to do, or if you need to just get out of the house, head down to the Millennium Stage to check out the Broto Roy Ensemble, which specializes in blending Indian classical music with jazz. 6 p.m. Free
>> On Friday, well-known smooth jazz keyboardist Alex Bugnon begins a three night stand at Blues Alley with daily 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets are $25 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
>> Also on Friday, veteran saxophonist Joe Ford comes to Twins Jazz for a two night stand. A longtime member of piano legend McCoy Tyner's band, Ford has 35 recordings to his credit and is one of those journeyman musicians whose time is long past due. Tickets to the 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. sets are $18.
>> Our pick for the weekend is vocalist Rekha Ohal (pictured), who is playing this Saturday at HR-57 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.. A former resident of D.C., now based in Denver, Ohal's songs blend elements of traditional jazz, world music, and R&B. $12
>> The Millennium Stage presents another great show on Saturday. The Afro-Rican Ensemble performs “jazz with conviction, hip hop with consciousness, and rhythms that will open your mind.” 6 p.m. Free
>> On Sunday, catch local keyboardist Will Rast at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. at 9:30 p.m. Call 202-667-0088 for cover information.
>> The Millennium Stage is once again the place to be next Monday when it hosts Catfish Hodge. Labeled an "American folk blues hero," Hodge has been on the road for 35 years and has released 24 albums during that time.
>> Rain Pryor, daughter of the great Richard Pryor and an alum of '80s sitcom Head of the Class, performs next Monday at Blues Alley with 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. sets. Providing the music for this cabaret performance is a band led by local drummer Keith Kilgo. Tickets are $30 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
>> Next Tuesday, head over to Utopia and check out local organist Bill Heid, who performs with altoist Lyle Link and drummer Tony Martucci. 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. No cover
