College Hoops Rundown: GMU Spices It Up
George Mason capped a successful holiday week by beating South Carolina yesterday to take third-place in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla. Will Thomas paced the Patriots with 22 points and 11 rebounds, solidifying his place on the All-Tournament team.
George Mason kicked off their tournament with an 87-77 win over 18th-ranked Kansas State. John Vaughan's 21 points led the team, which put all five starters in double figures. Folarin Campbell's 25 points made him high man in Mason's effort in an 84-76 loss to No. 20 Villanova on Friday.
Mason opens CAA play on Thursday, hosting 5-1 Drexel.

Terps Back On Track
Maryland (4-2), who dropped back to back games against UCLA and Missouri last week at the CBE Classic, bounced back against Lehigh at the Comcast Center last Friday in a game that showed promise from the young Terrapin squad. Freshman center Braxton Dupree earned his first start in lieu of senior Bambale Osby (stomach virus) and played well in the post, netting 14 points. Meanwhile, Greivis Vasquez had a career-high 22 points and Eric Hayes hit three 3-pointers which provided a much-needed boost to a team that until last Friday lacked an outside shooting threat. The Terps are off until Wednesday when they take on Illinois in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at College Park on ESPN2 with tip-off scheduled for 7:30pm.
The #3 ranked women's team spent their Thanksgiving weekend on the West Coast and continued their undefeated streak (8-0) after earning wins against UC Santa Barbara and UCLA. Kristi Toliver scored 22 points against the Bruins, 18 of which came from her six treys, while Marissa Coleman had a double-double with 20 points and 10 boards. They face Pitt tomorrow night at Comcast with tip-off set for 7pm.

Retrievers Snatch Win From GW
With star guard Maureece Rice suspended for an unspecified rules violation, the Colonials fell to a Maryland-Baltimore County team they probably should have beaten. The Colonials, who already lost presumptive starting point guard Travis King for the season to injury, were outrebounded 42-32 and were mauled from the three point line, as the Retrievers hit 12 of 25 shots from behind the arc including 9 for 15 in the second half. Virginia Tech transfer Wynton Witherspoon led the Colonials with 21 points and Rob Diggs added 19 and 7 boards. UMBC guard Brian Hodges scored 27 in front of the home crowd. No GW player had more than 3 assists, which may spell trouble in the future. The Colonials face #1 UCLA on Wednesday.

There Can Be Only One: AU 73, NJIT 50
The American University Eagles (3-3) struck down the mighty New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders this Saturday. The Eagles were led by junior Garrison Carr, who collected all 15 of his points from beyond the arc. American held the Highlanders to 18 first half points and held double digit leads throughout most of the game. Tonight, the Eagles head to Emmitsburg, Maryland to face the 0-3 Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers.
Hoyas Face Battle-Tested Monarchs
The Georgetown Hoyas (3-0), idle since last Wednesday's 57-48 win over Ball State, await a tricky matchup at Old Dominion (3-3) this Wednesday. The Monarchs' three losses have come against quality opponents -- at Clemson, at #1 UNC and at #6 Louisville. The Hoyas will need to count on the leadership of seniors Roy Hibbert, Jonathan Wallace, and Patrick Ewing Jr. to come away with the win in this potential "trap game".

G-M-U WHAT!?
