Robberies Prompt Adams Morgan Crime Site

adamsmorgancops.jpgA recent spate of armed robberies and muggings in Adams Morgan prompted Jonathon and Laura Lunardi to launch a new community website. AdamsMorganCrime.org aims to connect residents to discuss and solve crime issues in the neighborhood. Residents are invited to register on the site and share their stories in the forum, namely details on where and when crime happens in the neighborhood. The site is just getting off the ground, so it's difficult to tell yet how effective it could actually be. A monthly email newsletter is also in the works.

WJLA first reported on two muggings that took place on Friday night. The first took place around 9 p.m. when a couple walked by Ontario and Kalorama roads and were held at gunpoint by four people with hoods over their faces. The foursome demanded the couples' valuables, who in turn gave them everything they had.

The second incident, about an hour later, occurred at the corner of Summit Place and 18th Street, a few blocks away from the incident at Ontario and Kalorama. A woman was also robbed at gunpoint, despite walking with a group of five other friends -- 2 male, 3 female.

According to a note tacked onto a condo building at Lanier Place, a woman was mugged last Wednesday night just outside its door.

A spokesperson for the MPD confirmed with WJLA that there is a rise in crime in Adams Morgan, but also notes that there is a spike in armed robberies during this time of year.

Stay on those numbered streets you NW kiddies.

That's a great suggestion - except some people actually LIVE on those streets.

I can't wait for legal handguns.

Oh, I can't carry, too?

god I'm so sick of this shit. I will have all kinds of rage for someone that tries to pull it on me.

It only takes living in Adams Morgan for more than a minute to realize that what they have are not crime waves, but crime "tides".

Whether it's gangs shooting at each other across 16th St (summer 2003), random Virginians stabbing each other after the bars close (summer 2006), or people beating each other into Comas (also summer 2006, I think) it's hard to think in terms of crime getting "worse" in the area since that's a relative term. All shitting on the area aside... I really miss it.

I also have good memories of relieving my bladder and defecating in the ally behind Toledo Lounge. Oh, for the heady aroma of human waste, vomit, and Jumbo Slice at 2am. It's the soundtrack of our lives.

Don't forget the mouse / rat invasion of 2005. Again probably not a "wave" of rodents... just a returning tide.

I wish the Web site folks luck, but another neighborhood resident did the same thing after he was mugged in December of 2002 and that site is now pretty much defunct.

Hello all. Thank you Fredo for posting the information about the website. I created the website so that we could have an online forum and place for central news on what is happening about the Adams Morgan crime.

Since I set the website up and was on ABC News. Jim Graham has jumped in and given money for more cameras and better lighting. The police have been much more numerous patrolling the streets. Also, we are putting together a neighborhood watch group to patrol the streets as well.

We plan to keep up the pressure and send a message to the criminal element in our neighborhood!

Sincerely,

Jonathon Lunardi
