Don't Forget the Mumbo Sauce... In Your Pop Music

2006_1030_HowardChina4.jpgLike half-smokes, go-go and taxation without representation, mumbo sauce is something that's uniquely D.C. And suddenly, it's getting bandied about all over the radio. We're not talking about the group Mambo Sauce, who have their own ode to the District. We're talking about DJ Flexx (of WPGC)'s "Chicken Wings & Fried Rice", a song that is — seriously — entirely about mumbo sauce. You can listen to a partial clip here, or tune your radio to 95.5 to hear the whole song in all its sticky, savory glory.

So what do you think -- is a song that details the strategy behind speedy late night eating to hurry up a post-bar hook up, and includes the lyrics, "I can't fake, mumbo sauce keep me half-baked" exactly what we've been missing to put D.C. on the musical map? Is it hilariously bad? Hilariously awesome? Not hilarious at all? While you're deciding, we're going to run and get some take out.

my mother said if you can't say something nice...

""I can't fake, mumbo sauce keep me half-baked" exactly what we've been missing to put D.C. on the musical map?

The only way this inane song, whose intro is a solid 30 seconds of "Chicken Wings & Fried Rice!" could put "DC back on the music map," would be if the whole of the music-consuming world had simultaneous aural lobotomies.

Jesus H. Frackinstacks, it must be a slow news day for the DCist writers.

So far, I've seen Chinese takeout places serve "mumbo sauce," "mambo sauce," "mumble sauce," and even "moms bo sauce." One of these days, I'm going to hear groaning from behind the deep fryers and notice they're selling "mongo sauce." Then again, there's been some pretty odd things showing up on Chinese menus. [NSFW]

Keep in mind that the Mandarin word for "fry without oil" is the same as "rough sex," and the "mambo sauce" conundrum seems pretty mundane.

Shouldn't T-Pain be featured on this track?

how can you all hate? this song goes... and its mambo sauce...

This blog entry is about something that I am not personally interested in. Therefore, it must logically follow that today is a slow news day at DCist HQ.

Actually, I don't even LIVE in DC! Where the heck is Virginiaist?

Geez...

Virginiaist, yeah I went out with her once. She was a bit tepid and shy though. She dressed nicely though albeit somewhat matronly.

I wonder where I can get some that's the least bad? That looks like ketchup and honey.

Every takeout's mumbo sauce is like a unique and precious snowflake. Some are barbecue-ey, some ketchupey, some expired cough syrupy. The best are a cross between duck sauce and bbq sauce, but with a slight buffalo wing kick.

mambo sauce has changed in the errrea tho... it used to be spicier... I have noticed it is more sweet now a days... just an observation
