Plan to Hand D.C. Back to Maryland Exposed
If the powers that be think we're going to go easily or quietly, they're wrong.
The Post today exposed a devious little plan to chip away at the District's identity, starting with phasing out the city's postmark and replacing it instead with one bearing the name of our northern neighbor, Maryland. According to a Post study, of 235 letters mailed from every quadrant and zip code within city limits, only 24 -- 10 percent -- were delivered bearing the loud and proud "WASHINGTON DC" postmark. The overwhelming majority, though, were bastardized with a postmark reading "SOUTHERN MD.", or worse yet, "SUBURBAN MD."
Sure, the Post Office claims that it has something to do with security, but we're no fools. The scheme to turn the District over to Maryland to avoid giving us our own voting rights has been clear for some time, and this is but another step that has so far included stealing away our Redskins' stadium and moving the Awakening sculpture on Hains Point to Prince George's County. What's next? The Wilson Building getting moved to Annapolis? Not on our watch.
We've had some victories of our own, though. We no longer have to root for the Orioles, and if the Senate ever acts on it, we might finally get one of our own quarters like every other state. For now, though, we'll be hand-writing in our own Washington postmark.

The Insurgency will not stand for this! End the Occupation! U.S. out of D.C. now!

How would giving us back to Maryland not gives us voting rights? Or would we not be able to vote their either.
And I for one (because this has to be said), welcome our new Marylander overlords.

Excuse me?
Us getting a quarter is in the same bill as Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands getting quarters?
It's bad enough to imply we're maryland with their postmarks, now they imply we're some sort of island protectorate with the quarter bill?!
I'm calling my representative immediately to demand that this bill be split into two bills, "The Umbrella-in-Your-Drink Places Quarter Act" and the "Center of Political Power of the United States Quarter Act".
...
Damn I've been all the way around my rolodex twice now and I can seem to find the number for my representative... funny, it seems like the kind of thing I would keep in here...
If dcist is going to allow spam on these threads, I might as well let everyone know that Monkeyrotica Brand DC Voting Rights Anal Love Beads are "cumming" soon to a novelty condom shop near you. Wanda loved them and they didn't hurt her!
Much.
So? D.C. should be a part of Maryland. That way, we'd have House AND Senate representation, less bureaucracy in the city, more vibrant local politics/policies, and, uh, a state reptile (the terp!)
So why are you possibly complaining about getting all of those things!?

DC on a quarter? Come on you have a monopoly on the penny, five dollar, ten dollar and on the fitty. Although it would be interesting as to non-federal images they would use on the 25cent.

What is up with the multiple postings?!?!?
Every blog is full of 'em!!!!
HELP!!!!!
Though we don't have to root for the Orioles, some of us still do. But as a loyal DCist in every other sense, I join in the shaking of the collective fist.
Wow, I really wish I knew of a place where I could repeatedly learn about quarter bills, state reptiles, and insurgency tee shirts...
I dunno. $1.5 billion budget deficit? How about all those DC surplus dollars going to Annapolis?
Fear the turtle indeed!
ditto and ditto?? lots of multi-posts these days.
This story fits better on an Onion blog than on DCist. Really? Don't you know that we actually used to be part of Maryland? And you call yourself a DCist! Arlington went back to Virginia. Why shouldn't we go back to Maryland?
comments thingy is messed up. and it you will now read multiple time about how it is messed up. and you'll read that multiple times, too.
it's like a star trek episode.
I say give DC back to Maryland.
I wouldn't mind becoming part of Maryland if it meant we could have voting representation, but somehow I doubt Maryland would want us.
This will, this will, this will be posted three times... so I better make it count.
If the MD overlords try and move in on our peaceful, efficiently governed, and bountiful streets, and turn them into some vile PG county or Fells Point imitation complete with giant plaster crabs and turtles on the sidewalks, it will get Bastille up in here.
I say give DC back to Maryland.
the wilson bridge going to annapolis reminds me of when carmen san diego would steal the grand canyon and hide it in france.
Conversely:
DC proper is a cesspool of crime and poverty that would take a shit on the good name of my fair home state. Keep them politically separate.
I don't live in DC, but if I did, whenever anyone asked me where I lived, I would say, "DC, bitches!"
NEVER!
dc is dc, and that's that. don't send us back to maryland!
i don't understand you people who want to be part of maryland. where's the fun in that?
I received a card from a friend in Alexandria and it said "Suburban Maryland". They're trying to take over the whole metro area!
Fuck the quarter. D.C. should be on a motherfuckin' $100 bill!
