Some Officers Unaware Street Cleaning is Suspended

2007_1211_parkingsign%282%29.jpgThis WJLA story, about a group of residents on the 1300 block of Quincy Street NW who all got parking tickets for street cleaning violations last week, would be just a normal amount of frustrating, instead of blood-boilingly infuriating, were it not for this little nugget:

Pender went to the 4th district police headquarters to find our why he and his neighbors got tickets anyway.

"I talked to him and said I got a ticket for parking during street cleaning, but street cleaning has been suspended. He was a little surprised to find out street cleaning has been suspended and said we didn't know anything about it."

DCist readers know that street cleaning was suspended for the winter in the District on Nov. 30, just like it is every year. How hard is it to let the people who write parking tickets know about this stuff?

because, as much as i love this city, and love living here....we still have idiots running 50% of the city.

You need to up that percentage a couple dozen, IMGoph.

Maybe if the officers lived in the city they would know the parking rules...

Do we have a police district 22? This from the DC agency which once wouldn't renew my registration because they couldn't account for the payment despite being shown the cancelled deposited check.

FYI those tickets probaly came from DPW which has nothing to do with MPD.. I was getting one the other day as well and I told the dpw lady and she stated to me she did not know anything about that. Told me to fight the ticket

If the police dont know yet, I guess the subcontractor's ticket-writing automatons wont be reprogrammed for at least a month or so...

If Joe Gibbs doesn't know you can't call back-to-back field goals to ice the kicker, how can you expect MPD or DPW know that sweeping season is over?

from the repeating comments here, i think it's clear that gothamist hasn't fixed the commenting problem yet...

If Joe Gibbs doesn't know you can't call back-to-back time outs to ice the kicker, does it suprise you that MPD or DPW don't know that sweeping season is over?

Completely non-related, but I'm still pissed.

In a city full of corruption and incompetence, it has been my experience that DPW is more competent at BEING INCOMPETENT than all the other agencies combined. They generate so much revenue through ticketing and towing that the city tries to ignore their activities. It is going to take an uprising by the residents to have that agency overhauled!

dcnole - since DPW does the street cleaning and is the agency that issued the press release about street cleaning being suspended, one would HOPE that their ticket-folk would know about it.

And DPW does write the vast majority of parking tickets, so yes, it probably did come from DPW.

And that's just sad.

You would think they'd notice that for months the streets are nearly empty on sweeping days and then nearly full after December 1. Who chalks that up to coincidence?

Undecided

So are you desperate to make the end-of-the-week hilarious comments roundup or what?

the sorry thing is that even fighting a ticket that is facially incorrect is no sure bet... I once got a ticket while parked (legally) on the south side of corcoran st nw during a street cleaning... it didn't matter that I was parked right under a sign that said parking there was legal at the time... it didn't matter that I showed up to contest the ticket, pointing out that the allegations on the ticket didn't support a fine... it didn't matter that I did what the magistrate told me to do and mailed in a picture of the sign (why did he tell me to do this anyway?)... it didn't matter that I was parked legally... if they want to give you a ticket, they'll give you a ticket...

and we won't talk about the time I got two past due notices in the mail for tickets issued to other cars... sheesh!

... it's a racket I tell ya, a racket!

I feel like all the smart people that come to DC end up working for the federal government or other national organizations. whoever is left behind and can't get the "more impressive" work is left to the city jobs... and well... this is what we get.

Hey! I got a city job! And I'm smart. Not like they say! I'm smart! And I demand respect!

This reminds me of a funny story. Well kinda funny.

My friend had a gun pulled on him in Chinatown (not funny) over $0.35. Nobody was hurt or anything and the guy didn't even rob my friend, he was just pissed that my friend wouldn't give him change. Anyway he also threatened to kill my friend at some later date, prompting my friend to consult with the police. After talking to a cop for a little while, my friend asked the cop what he would recommend he do, given the situation. Then, this was said:

"I wouldn't live in D.C. I live in Maryland and I can carry my gun around with me whenever I want as long as I'm off duty. I don't, but I could, you know. If I were in danger or something. You should move out of D.C."

I kinda feel like D.C. police should be required to live in the District so they'd actually give a shit about people who live here. It's like they treat their job as a single-day tour of some warzone, and then leave feeling satisfied that they can go home to a safer, and slightly more intelligently run environment.

Err I misquoted - it should've been "even if I'm off duty"
