Charles Ross IS Darth Vader, Yoda, R2D2...

2007_1214_starwars.jpgCue music: Dum. DUM. Dum dum dum DUUM dum. Dum dum dum DUUM dum. Dum dum dum dummmm….

If that makes any sense to you, you’re probably the target of Charles Ross’s uproarious One Man Star Wars Trilogy, now making a return engagement in D.C. at Woolly Mammoth Theater. The show's exactly what it sounds like -- Ross acts out just about every scene of the three original films with gusto, even humming the movements of the soundtrack -- and he only needs 60 minutes to pull it off.

The result is hysterical for hardcore fans, more than entertaining for those casually familiar with the films, and probably a little confusing if you haven't seen the movies (but really, guys, if not, it's about time). Ross is a very talented entertainer -- his voice shifts easily into an amalgam of different impressions (C3PO's impressive; Vader isn't, but still amuses), and he's got a boundless energy that has him leaping across the stage, simulating battle scenes and space ship confrontations.

Ross is clearly a Star Wars fan, but the show lacks both the worshipful air of an obsessed fanboy and the cutting cynicism of someone prone towards mocking the sci-fi universe. He's affectionate, but more than willing to poke fun at many of the movies' more mock-worthy attributes, from Luke Skywalker's whiny demeanor to the more ridiculous moments in the Han Solo/Leia courtship.

More often than not, Ross invokes actual lines from the movies rather than editorializing too much -- the quotes range from the more cliche "Use The Force, Luke!" moments to the more obscure. His jokes are usually quick asides that breeze by, only pausing to get a quick laugh before moving on, and his delivery never falters.

One of the best things about the show is how effectively it can bring you back to the films, and everything you remember liking about them (or laughing about). Each scene Ross recreates conjures the movie moment in your mind -- Ross has no trouble calling to mind something as abstract as a creature-infested garbage chute. The hour flies by (though the ending's a bit anticlimatic; if only Return of the Jedi was as entertaining as its predecessors), and it's impossible to leave the theater without admiration for Ross and an intense desire to be watching The Empire Strikes Back again for the first time. Ross is like many of us as kids, running across the stage with a fake light saber -- that is, if we were delivering deft one-liners at the age of 10.

One Man Star Wars Trilogy runs through Dec. 30 at Woolly Mammoth. Tickets are available online.

All I can say is that he's going to have a hard time topping Family Guy: Blue Harvest.

"Spread that butter...with the Force!"
