D.C. Postmark to Make Triumphant Return

DC_Postmark.JPGEarlier this month the Post revealed that the majority of mail sent from the District is bastardized with a postmark reading "SOUTHERN MD." or "SUBURBAN MD.," a practice imposed soon after a 2001 anthrax attack in a D.C. postal facility. District officials and voting rights activists were none-too-pleased -- after all, if they take our postmark, what's next? Our women and children?

Today, the Post Office relented. Under pressure from D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton -- who issued a strongly worded statement upon hearing of postmark-gate -- D.C. Postmaster Yverne P. Moore announced earlier today that a new procecsing system was being put in place to ensure that D.C. mail gets the right postmark, not that Maryland abomination.

And not a second too late, we might add. DCist's plan to torch a post office in protest was feeling like it might be a little over the top. Put away the cans of gasoline and ski masks, guys. We'll save them for some other time.

Good to see DC's representative working tirelessly on such matters of burning import. Now if there were only something she could do to make the Capitol look less like a huge, aroused tittyball.

I don't understand why the DC postmark was switched to MD after the anthrax scare: were recipients of mail postmarked 'DC' afraid to open it??

Who sends mail?

A.

A story in The Washington Post revealed that since two postal workers died in a 2001 anthrax attack at the Brentwood processing center in Northeast Washington, most D.C. mail was being routed through a facility in Gaithersburg, and was not receiving the D.C. postmark...

Mail from D.C. that arrived at the Gaithersburg facility was being mixed with the Maryland mail, before being stamped with a postmark.

There's nothing funnier than a joke about torching a federal building. Is Timothy McVeigh writing for this site from beyond the grave?

Lab,

I believe they send the mail to a MD facility. After the anthrax attacks, the DC facilities did not have the technology to screen for anthrax or other bio hazards, plus another one (Brentwood) was closed since it was contaminated with anthrax. I am sure the tax payers of America appreciate the add expense that is needed to set up another sorting process, so someone has the smug satisfaction that their mail was processed in DC, although we all know its all pretend.

If we continue to stamp mail from DC with a Maryland postmark, the terrorists have already won!!!

Oh RJ, you made it too easy for me to launch into a taxation without representation comment: I'm so sorry that the "tax-payers of America" will be annoyed. Stop making me pay taxes, and I'll be happy to give up my friggin' stamp, just like I'd be happy to give up representation. OH wait, that second one wasn't a choice.

First, the stamp. Next, the quarter. Last, the chunk of old DC that broke away and became Arlington and Alexandria.

ew. we don't want anything that became virginia.

YEAH

"after all, if they take our postmark, what's next? Our women and children?"

They can have our children, for all I care. In fact, I offer them up in exchange for one of those cool "state" quarters. But for the love of God, don't mess with our women.
