Photo of the Day: December 20, 2007

Flickr user Nivad caught some great detail of the St. Thomas Parish's decaying architecture near Dupont Circle. Though we love to see great pictures taken with any kind of camera, I'm sure the high-powered Nikon D300 didn't exactly hurt the quality of this image here. (Mom? Christmas, hmm?) EXIF.

that church is far from decaying...
most of it was lost in a fire years ago, though they kept up the remainder of the facade as a tribute to the old structure. the church is fine, just a piece of history held up to be preserved.
kind of disingenuous to show the darkest part of the facade and say the church is decaying. :/
As a member of the parish, I can say that the ruins are, in fact, decaying...in a rather rapid rate I might add. As the ruins you now see are of the old altar inside the now gone gothic sanctuary, they were never meant to be an exterior wall, which is why they will continue to deteriorate as long as they are left standing. We try to keep the water and mildew out as best we can, but our efforts are proving more and more frustrated, and frankly, many of us are looking forward to the day when we can build another sanctuary out what is now a park. But come inside sometime! I guarantee you that the congregation is very much thriving and not decaying at all!
