Am I the only one who thinks this year's White House Christmas tree is a little ... gaudy? These sweet little trees, part of the annual Pageant (or Pathway) of Peace, though perhaps less regal, seem more personal and softly colorful. Flickr user philliefan_99 took this shot of some families strolling by last week, down the path that shows off 56 trees -- one for each state, territory, and of course, D.C. I'm sure most would agree with the commenter, though: it would look even better with a few inches of snow. EXIF.

the white house tree is always ugly, in my opinion. I like the capital tree better.

I agree -- the National Tree looks like a crooked Easter egg. It seriously needs a trim.

The White House/national Christmas tree SHOULD be gaudy (those bows make it especially so this year), just like the lighting ceremony should be extra cheesy. Deep, deep down, isn't that what we all want anyway?

I think the reason the White House tree looks so bad is that the lights are hung in sections, not as individual strings, so it's like a big bright blanket is just draped over the tree!

The problem with the White House tree is that they have a long-term contract with General Electric - and their blind-as-a-bat designer. There's a twin to the WH tree in Fairfield, Connecticut, and it looks equally hideous, every year.

If I were President, one of the first moves of the "let's get the easy scut work out of the way" kind would be to terminate the contract with GE and simply let the President come up with the lighting design alone - then the only one to blame for crap lighting design would be the Commander in Chief.

Y'all, I'm in Wisconsin, and lemme tell you the no snow looks pretty good from here.

That tree is fug for sure.
