Morning Roundup: Happiness Enforcement Edition

2007_1231_MR%282%29.jpgGood morning, Washington. With a new year less than 24 hours away and an improbable playoff berth for the Redskins suddenly a reality, we frankly expect you to have been skipping in to your offices today, in a total and joyous rapture. Even if you've had to work straight through the holidays this year, we will tolerate no whining on this, or really any other matter, on this particular New Year's Eve. There will be only good cheer and winning humor today. Got that, D.C.? That is all.

Gun Buyback Gets 349 Guns: The second gun amnesty buyback program this month netted 349 guns on Saturday, about 70 more guns than the previous effort. Payment for the guns, which came in from residents across Virginia, Maryland and D.C., ranged from $10 for pellet guns to $100 semiautomatic pistols. The District paid a total of about $19,000 for the 349 guns that were turned in.

Singer Working to Keep Juveniles Out of Adult Jail: The Examiner reports that outgoing D.C. Attorney General Linda Singer is using her last moments in her job to lobby to prevent prosecutors from automatically sending teenagers to adult jail for violent crimes. Whether Singer, who resigned two weeks ago, has enough clout left to pull off that sort of reform remains to be seen, but she appear to have some allies on the D.C. Council on the issue.

Briefly Noted: Off-duty PG County officers shoot man ... Police-involved shooting in D.C. ... Propane truck overturns in Manassas, forcing evacuations, lengthy clean-up ... Body removed from Tidal Basin.

Anybody want to start a pool on when the scandal will break about a DC cop(s) getting caught reselling these guns on the street for a tidy profit?
