Morning Roundup: A Few More Fires Edition

image of sunset behind the columns at the national arboretum by flickr user Nivad

Good morning, Washington. With the Christmas holiday looming, things are slowing down in workplaces around the region. Well, most workplaces, anyway — D.C.'s firefighters seem to be keeping plenty busy. Yesterday, of course, there was the fire at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Since then there's been a two alarm fire at the Chinatown Red Roof Inn, and this impressive gathering of firefighters just south of Logan around 6 p.m. last night. Here's hoping their holiday season calms down.

More On The D.C. Quarter: The Post follows up yesterday's news with a longer article on the District's inclusion in the Treasury's state quarter program. First, the good news: the city government gets to decide on the design, and Mayor Fenty is promising that the process will involve "maximum resident input" — so it sounds like "No Taxation Without Representation" has a real shot at appearing on U.S. currency. The bad news: state flags aren't allowed in the designs, making the other half of the winning choice from yesterday's poll a no-go. Also, it turns out that we're only getting a quarter because Puerto Rico is. That stings a little, but I suppose we'll take what we can get.

Maryland Gives Seventeen Year-Olds The Vote: Well, in the state's primary, anyway. WTOP reports that Maryland's Attorney General has issued an opinion that will ensure citizens can vote in the state's presidential primary on February 12, provided that they will be eighteen by the time of the general election. Both parties had requested such a measure.

Mad props on the Stop Snitchin DVDs, yo. Keepin it reals in Bodymore Murdaland.

BTW, does anyone else find the It's Just Lunch banner ads here disturbing? I mean, the women all have the identical dog grin Photoshopped on their homogenized faces. You can't tell me the one with the fork is actually eating. Who looks like that in a restaurant? They all look like they're trying too hard to enjoy themselves, which I guess is a standard DC "busy professional" trait. But the dude is just creeping me out. What the HELL is he doing with his hands? He's either thinking, "If she asks me how much I make AGAIN, I'm going to deck her," or "Two more drinks and I'll ask if she's into fisting."

I like the IJL logo, though, which is clearly the three stages of male arousal.

Monkeyerotica, I's gots the Firefox with Adblock plus = No banner ads, pop-ups or anything annoying like that.

Bodymore, where keepin it real has gone a little too far. "I hope you catch AIDS in yor mouth and your lips are the first to go." ~No Snitches 2

Does that one guy on there look a little like Tu Pac?

Great. Now I've got to reload until I get that ad..

You mean that Maryland didn't previously permit 17-year-olds who would be 18 by the time of the general election to vote in the primary? Weak! Indiana, not a state one would associate with turnout-friendly policies, has allowed people who would be 18 by the general election to vote in primaries at least since I was 17, which was so long ago that I cast my vote for Michael Dukakis. (In my defense, Dukakis was the only Democrat left on the ballot by the time the Indiana primary came around.)

Actually, I kinda like the ads. Particularly the loveaccess.com one with the woman who looks like either the roofie is starting to kick in or she just sat on a tack.

Can we get adultfriendfinder.com to sponsor some ad space on dcist? Gotta love those butterface headless-torso-in-a-bra personal ads. Sad yet mildly arousing at the same time, like tentacle porn or the Mrs. America Pageant.

None of those women would go out with me anyway.
I don't wear suits and I don't go to places that require them.

I really wonder what the It's Just Lunch people are thinking, advertising here. What sort of "busy professional" is wasting their time posting snark to dcist? Aren't they too busy acquiring subsidiaries in hostile acquisitions?

Then again, I guess that's what dating in DC is all about.

The IJL ad kills me! It looks like a teaser for the most awkward episode of "The Dating Game" ever. I think the guy is supposed to be holding a pen, with which to sign off on all those hostile takeovers, but the resolution is so poor there's just no telling.

cminus: I agree your surprise. I'm from Kentucky, and that's (at least in my lifetime) always how we played it down there.

I hope my boy Carmelo makes an appearance in the "Stop Snitchin'" sequel. Ebert said he was the shining star in the first one.

A "Stop Snitchin'" sequel without Carmelo would be like a Teen Wolf sequel without Michael J. Fox (Jason Batemen, you've overcome great odds).

The Maryland piece is misleading. For decades Maryland allowed 17 year olds who would be 18 by the general election to vote in the primary election. Last year, after the AG's office issued an opinion on early voting, the State BOE decided that somehow applied to 17 year olds voting in primaries and therefore they stopped the practice. However, the news this week was generated by Dems and Reps banning together and petitioning the AG's office and the BOE to reinstate the practice. The BOE is expected to rule on that today.

I love these "Stop Snitching" peeps. They're the same ones who cry on camera when their neighbor/friend/buddy gets blown away and they plead with the killer to turn himself in. OR They're the same ones always saying, "Peace..out or keeping it real!" OR they don't understand why their neighborhood has so much crime.

You can't have it both ways.

Those ads are funny. Because we know IT'S NOT JUST LUNCH. It's also a nooner at some seedy hotel over by Union Station.

Well, if we're lucky, this year's Stop Snitchin' will be as successful as the last one - Baltimore PD caught about a dozen parole violators because they were shown at their places of residence in the video. Smart criminals are my favorite.

IT'S NOT JUST LUNCH. It's also a burning sensation when you urinate and so many crabs you have to throw out your mattress.

Just to reiterate as adamsmorgan already clarified. 17-year-olds in Maryland that would be 18 by the general election have been allowed to vote in primaries. I did it some 5 years ago without any issues.
