One More Embezzlement Scandal to End the Year

100_1405.jpgSure, Harriette Walters might have stolen upwards of $44 million from the District's coffers, but at least she wasn't stealing directly from low-income school children.

According to a WTOP report this morning, District officials have arrested and charged a city official with submitting false expense reports totaling $11,385 for big bills at local restaurants and strip clubs. Emerson Crawley, a program manager at After School for All at Shaw Junior High School, allegedly spent the money, from a fund intended for low-income school children, between 2003 and 2005, including a $1,200 tab at Finemondo's Italian Restaurant and $472 at Camelot Show Club. If convicted, Crawley would face up to 17 years in jail and $1.7 million in fines, not to mention the life-long stigma of having stolen directly from low-income school children.

We're still checking with Harry Jaffe to see how Crawley's alleged crimes fit in with his odd theory concerning women and corruption cases. We're guessing his next column will be titled "Scandal Reveals Men Love to Steal -- And Go To Strip Clubs."

Every embezzler in DCPS knows you're supposed to go to Joanna's Club for your stripper fix, not Camelot. The former is much more discrete with their paperwork and they don't play nearly as much Aerosmith. Also, when submitting your monthly expenditure forms for reimbursement, never write "titty bar" under Line-item C. The correct terminology is either "Junior Varsity athletics," "teen gymnastics" or "legal brief consulting." Finally, trying to write-off strip club tips on your taxes is in poor taste.

Why would you spend $1200 at a restaurant but then only $472 at a strip club?

What I liked in the original Post story was how the administrator of the program defended the guy. Wonder if she got canned as well?

The way DCPS has been overseeing federal grants, I would bet they long ago designated Camelot as 21st Century Community Learning Center. Afterschool biology lesson, anyone?

Yep, this guy's boss should go as well. If I remember the quote right, she basically said that this guy was a good employee, that this stealing thousands of dollars was just a little trifle, and he had been 'counseled'.

Any DC employee boss that thinks stealing thousands from low income kids is no big deal needs to be fired.

I figure stealing from low-income kids merits more than either just counseling or losing one's job. Taking our cue from the Federal Government, who has no problems using waterboarding and tasering for pursuasion, I'd like to add the little-known "Alcatraz alimentary" where Burt Lancaster comes and shoves pidgeons up your butt. Talk about conversation lubrication! Not only does this serve as a deterrent to future embezzlers, but DC gets rid of it's population of flying disease bags. It's win-win(ce).
