Vote For Anacostia in HGTV Contest

2007_1213_hgtv.jpgWe've mentioned it briefly before, but it's worth reminding everyone that a D.C. neighborhood is in contention to win a makeover from HGTV, and a lot of local bloggers are asking you to cast your vote to help make it happen.

In partnership with Rebuilding Together, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Natural Resources Defense Council, HGTV's Change the World, Start at Home contest has identified D.C.'s Anacostia as one of ten needy neighborhoods in the United States that could win a "neighborhood revitalization" package -- it's a little unclear to us exactly what this entails, but we're imagining a good amount of cleaning, sprucing and greening.

Go here to vote for Anacostia to win the HGTV contest. Everyone can cast one vote every day between now and Dec. 21, so vote often.

I don't know if there are any knitters here, but the Neighborhood Fiber Co. will enter you in a raffle to win a monthly sock yarn membership if you vote.

SE needs Iraq style surge not "sprucing"...Good people over yonder being held hostage by knuckleheads. I think that counts for terrorism, no?

From Rebuilding Together, Washington, DC:

If Washington, DC receives the most online votes between now and December 21st 2007, a grant will be awarded to Rebuilding Together of Washington, DC to complete these major projects – and more – in historic Anacostia:

· Build a playground for at risk children at a daycare center on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue;
· Install a chairlift into a home so that the elderly homeowner can reach his 2nd floor – where the only shower in the home is located;
· Significantly rebuild the home of a severely disabled woman who has 5 children;
· Repair collapsed ceilings and floors in multiple houses so that residents can be safe in their own homes.

not sure if that first comment was serious, but either way, it's hilarious.

The first comment is totally true. I'm Karida of Neighborhood Fiber Co. and I'm running a raffle for people who vote. A randomly selected winner will get a membership to the Winter in Washington Sock Club.

So all you knitters (or friends of knitters), get out and vote!
