Weekly Music Agenda

2007_1217_roofwalkers.jpg

MONDAY
>> It wasn't too far from here -- just a couple hours south in Midlothian, VA, where Aimee Mann got her start. Now the guitar playing song weaver is a bonafide modern music legend. She's treating The Birchmere to her 2nd Annual Christmas Show, and it's not something you should miss. $45.50, 7:30 p.m.

>> Roofwalkers (pictured), the band formerly known as Pagoda, are treating the Galaxy Hut crowd to an evening of low key music and fun, with their friends Sad Crocodile. $5 suggested donation. 9 p.m.

TUESDAY
>> The United House of Prayer’s Sweet Heaven Kings, the 16-member horn and percussion crew from Anacostia, play their regular holiday program, starting at 6 p.m. at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage. FREE.

WEDNESDAY
>> Whether the opening chords of "Into Your Arms" still send you into a flannel-fueled romantic tailspin, leaving you doodling "Me + ED = True Love 4 Ever" on your notebooks, or you're a fan of their most recent releases, Evan Dando and his band The Lemonheads will make a good mid-week stop for you at the Black Cat. $17, 8 p.m.

THURSDAY
>> We're not sure how indie rock, pop and dance music spun weekly at the Rock and Roll Hotel leads to a mullet theme, but we're willing to find out. Lace up your dancing shoes and head out to H Street for Trailer Trash Night. 8 p.m. to close, free.

FRIDAY
>> Three Stars alums New Rock Church of Fire are realizing a dream they confessed in their *** interview: playing the Black Cat's main stage. These hard rocking locals always turn their shows into a party, and this week's show promises just that. They'll be joined by Mas y Mas, Velvet and Hammer No More The Fingers. $10, 9 p.m.

>> If you've happened upon the 18th Street Lounge any Wednesday over the past two years, you're probably familiar with SEE-I, the 8-piece reggae band that calls that bar home-base. This weekend at the Rock and Roll Hotel, they'll celebrate the holidays with some friends who are sure to get you dancing too -- DJ Mat the Alien and remix artists Fort Knox Five. Tickets for the Happy FKX-XMas are $10.

>> On the other side of the holiday coin is Blender music editor Rob Tannenbaum and Rosenbergs guitarist David Fagin’s music and comedy duo that tours around Chanukah time. These guys mix Jewish pride, jokes aimed at themselves, and lots of sexual innuendo in a set that generally includes songs like “Today I am a Man,” “Song for Mel Gibson,” and “Reuben the Hook-nosed Reindeer.” Tickets for the "Good for the Jews" tour at the Birchmere are $19.50. 7:30 p.m.

>> Detractors often sneer that the Caribbean music genre soca is overly simplistic and perky, but they must have never heard the soulful voice of soca queen Alison Hinds. The former singer of Barbados combo Square One has gone solo and she will be at the Crossroads in Bladensburg.

SATURDAY
>> The beloved bluegrass group Hackensaw Boys are playing the Black Cat with These United States. $10, 9 p.m.

>> It was really hard to pick which of the hundreds of Soulja Boy videos on youtube to use for this next entry. The famed little kids ballet class crankin dat? The acoustic version? The hook 'em sidelines version? Do we throw caution to the wind and opt for Lil' Mama and her magical lip gloss instead? In the end, we decided to take the craze back to its roots and make sure that each and every DCist reader knows how to crank dat in time for their family holiday gatherings. Soulja Boy will grace our fair city as part of Chris Brown's Exclusive Holiday Tour, along with Bow Wow and Lil' Mama at the Verizon Center. $39.75-$79.75. 7:30 p.m.

>> Billed as a tribute to WPFW DJ Dr. Koffi Kissi Dompere, the African bill at Zanzibar includes the sweet-voiced melodies and bouncy highlife rhythms of Ghanian bandleader Felix Owusu along with the speedy rumba rhythms of Congolese guitarist Shiko Mawatu & friends (including soukous dancers) at Zanzibar on the Waterfront.

SUNDAY
>> Melancholy-voiced Jamaican singer and rapper Mavado is considered one of the top young dancehallers in his island nation. He will be at the Crossroads in Bladensburg.

Steve Kiviat contributed to this week's agenda.
