Weekly Music Agenda: Ho Ho Ho Edition

MONDAY
>> Not really into the whole Christmas Eve thing? Jewmongous is Sean Altman from Rockapella (of “Carmen Sandiego” fame) and “What I Like about Jew” who will be offering humorous Christmas Eve odes including “They Tried To Kill Us (We Survived, Let's Eat),” and “Taller Than Jesus,” at Jammin Java in Vienna. $20, 7 p.m. and 9:30 (two shows).

>> The music played by the DJs at the South African Christmas Eve party at Zanzibar on the Waterfront will presumably include that country’s brand of house style dance music known as kwaito, some old-school mbaqanga from the Mahotella Queens, and some accapella from Paul Simon’s pals Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Ladies free before 11; $15 before midnight.

TUESDAY
>> Had enough time at home with relatives, or just looking for something to do on a night when many places are closed? Go-go vets Rare Essence and hot newcomers Mambo Sauce (“Welcome to DC” is getting local radio airplay) will be taking the stage at Zanzibar beginning at 10 p.m.

WEDNESDAY
>> Three Stars vets and Neil Young enthusiasts the Beanstalk Library are playing the Black Cat's back stage. 9 p.m., $8.

>> "Why'd they kill my dog? Damn, man, I miss my uncle Charles, y'all." The people that brought you that fine lyric and so many more are playing the 9:30 Club tonight. Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. $25.

THURSDAY
>> Since 2004, the all girl band Five Four has been showing the east coast how to rock. They're playing a home town show this week at DC9. $8

>> He's come a long way since our first round of Three Stars back in 2005. Come to the Black Cat for Meredith Bragg's CD release, with Paul Michel and Donny Hue. 9 p.m., $8, back stage.

>> Another Three Stars fave takes the stage at Arlington's Iota. Join Gist (***), Verbal & Cobra Collective (ex-Bonapartes) at 9 p.m., $10.

>> Call them cabaret, call them punk, but whatever you do, don't call them gothic. The Dresden Dolls bring their unpredictable act to the Sixth & I Synagogue. 5 p.m., $25.

>> Marimba Linda Xelaju, a locally based ensemble performs traditional and
contemporary Mayan music on a large indigenous marimba that is like an oversized xylophone at the National Museum of the American Indian at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

FRIDAY
>> D.C. garage punks the Slickee Boys are back for their annual holiday reunion show and will be joined by Prabir & the Substitutes and the Beatnik Flies at the soon to be closed Chick Hall’s Surf Club in Bladensburg.

>> Patti Smith is awesome. See for yourself at the 9:30 Club. $25.

SATURDAY
2007_1224_rattler.jpg>> All we know about Rattler is that they've allegedly been banned from the Black Cat. If you want to see what kind of behavior could lead to such a reputation, head to the Rock & Roll Hotel. $10

>> Nigerian female Howard University student Madarocka will be rapping at Zanzibar on an international bill that also includes the Fulani Twins from Sierra Leone and Grace Ajode Jibril at Zanzibar on the Waterfront. 9 p.m.; $20 in advance, $22 at the door, $50 VIP.

>> Benjy Ferree (***) produces some of the most consistently well-done music in the D.C. area. His album Leaving the Nest was one of last year's best, and we can't wait to see what else he's got up his sleeve. With The Points and The Shirks at the Black Cat. $10, 9 p.m.

SUNDAY
>> Gossaye Tesfaye, an acclaimed sweet-voiced 30-something Ethiopian vocalist is at Fur Nightclub, 33 Patterson St. NE DC 202-842.3401 or 202.445.4926
