What's That You Say?

colorful doorYou all said almost too much good stuff this past week. Here's a wrapup of some of the best comments, as well as the semi-prized best avatar and commenter name awards.

Comment of the Week goes to frequent commenter Monkeyrotica, who doesn't like Council members complaining about closing schools:

Maybe if parents weren't fleeing their poorly-run wards, they wouldn't be shutting their precious schools down. The Council has had DECADES and BILLIONS to fix the schools, and what do we have to show for it? Yet we still have Marion Barry checking for racists under his bed every night, and Jim Graham pulling liquor licenses because someone, somewhere stubbed their toe. So they whine about not being included. You've had your chance, now ess the eff up and get the eff out of the way. Go back to what you do best, passing laws against cellphones, parking illegally, and giving yourself raises.

And read on for Mickey D's, wet leaves ruining trains, and more.

Invisible Sun doesn't get the hullabaloo about replacing the Golden Arches at 14th and U:

With respect to blocking the demolition of the McDonalds at 14th / U, WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE WORSE than what is already there? What is wrong with people?

Jeffrey makes us laugh about taxicab fares going up:

There hasn't yet been invented an emoticon to express how I'm feeling right now.

and OldPosterKnownAsCranky makes an interesting point:

Did the Taxicab Commission publish this notice of a rate increase in the DC Register? If not, then I don't think they can legally impose the surcharge because they did not provide the required public notice.

Rusty likes the Nats getting Lastings Milledge for Brian Schneider and some chump.

Agreed, Goat Boy. A steal for the Nationals. The Mets front office is a joke. Remember last year when Milledge was "untouchable"? This is the best they could do?

Voteprime shows us who the people in The Onion's "American Voices" column are (aka "What do you think?"), via an article from the unfortunately closed Giant magazine. Here's the link.

Monkeyrotica parses Tommy Wells, who wants to close the street outside Eastern Market.

"The market is safer with 7th Street closed, according to Wells, because kids aren't hurt by 'darting into the street.'"

Which is exactly why we need to close off traffic on every avenue in DC that's named after a State. The children!

"There's no reason ... that someone who is not from the neighborhood should be able to park there all day."

See, now that's a double-negative. So someone who IS from the neighborhood HAS a reason to NOT be able to park there. I wonder how the non-market-affiliated businesses feel about the closure? I wouldn't have a problem with it if they actually used the street for something, like more vendors or expanding the market. But if it's just a closed street with empty spaces, that seems like kind of a waste.

Fuggit, so long as I can get my Mangers' halfsmokes from Canales, they can build a Scientology Auditing Center in the street for all I care. I could use a laugh, and I haven't had an e-meter up my butt since I stopped huffing paint fumes.

and OldPosterKnownAsCranky zings Wells:

Wells needs to peddle his bike until he finds a clue.

A few folks think MIA thought she was playing in Baltimore when she was at the 9:30 Club.

Turkeyrotica (not monkey) has a good one about Metro delays due to wet leaves:

Wet leaves? Holy shit! This is a huge crisis for Metro, because everyone knows that in the history of railroads, wet leaves have never fallen upon train tracks before.

Although Politburo proves the truth is less funny:

turkey- railroads have always struggled with wet leaves in the fall. NJ Transit has a multi-million dollar machine to clean leaves from tracks, and they still have problems. trains can only carry so much sand on board.. and I'm not sure if metro trains even have an on-board sander.

------

Interesting comments on the post about new Metro cars, including short folks who wish Metro had better handles, and this one from Peregrine Solus about flip-up seats:

"wouldn't the train just fill up as it normally does with people sitting and a lot standing around?"

Only people who really enjoyed the smell of crotch would remain sitting.

heem makes an interesting point about mumbo/mambo sauce, using the D.C. accent even:

mambo sauce has changed in the errrea tho... it used to be spicier... I have noticed it is more sweet now a days... just an observation

Sophiamonster makes an interesting point about D.C. crime:

It only takes living in Adams Morgan for more than a minute to realize that what they have are not crime waves, but crime "tides".

Whether it's gangs shooting at each other across 16th St (summer 2003), random Virginians stabbing each other after the bars close (summer 2006), or people beating each other into Comas (also summer 2006, I think) it's hard to think in terms of crime getting "worse" in the area since that's a relative term. All shitting on the area aside... I really miss it.

A lot of folks had a lot to say about the reaction to I.M.P.'s bid for a Silver Spring music hall.
