This Week In Jazz
>> Our first pick of the week is first rate local drummer Tony Martucci (pictured). A member of Three Stars alums Jeff Antoniuk and the Jazz Update, tonight he will be leading his own group for 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley. He will be performing with a cast of stellar local musicians that will include wind player Lyle Link, bassist Tommy Cecil, and pianist Harry Appelman.
>> On Thursday, saxophonist Stephen Norfleet comes to Twins Jazz. Based in Charlottesville, VA, Norfleet studied with some of the finest teachers in New York and uses this training to apply his warm tone to a mix of originals and re-invented standards. Call (202) 234-0072 for set time and cover information.
>> On Friday and Saturday, the Anderson Twins, Bethesda natives now studying at Juilliard, lead a quintet at Twins Jazz. Call (202) 234-0072 for set time and cover information.
>> Another pick of the week takes us to Bohemian Caverns where Three Stars alums The Young Lions will be performing on Friday and Saturday night with special guest saxophonist Quamon Fowler. Tickets to the 9 and 11 p.m. sets are $15.
>> On Saturday, the Vagabond Opera brings the 1920s to the Millennium Stage with its blend of cabaret, traditional Parisian jazz, and other European styles of music. 6 p.m. Free
>> So much music, so little time. We have yet another must-see taking place this Saturday at the Kennedy Center, where pianist/organist Cyrus Chestnut (pictured) will be performing 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. sets. On this particular night Chestnut will focus on the Hammond B-3 organ as he blends his gospel and jazz roots in a program titled Sanctified Swing. Tickets are $30.
>> On Monday, trumpet star Chris Botti, whose body of work ranges from smooth jazz to avant-garde to the pop music of Sting, begins a three night stint at the Birchmere. $49.50 + Ticketmaster charges.
>> We'll have more about this show in a preview later this week, but anyone interested in seeing some of the best young musicians in the area should head down to Blues Alley next Monday to hear the Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra. Tickets are $18 + $12.50 surcharge/minimum.
>> Head down to the Millennium Stage on Monday to see the Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet. Four of the most dexterous voices around, they perform renditions of classic jazz, swing, pop, originals, and American songbook standards. 6 p.m. Free.
>> What's a better way to spend an evening than to catch some live jazz and while supporting a great cause? Next Tuesday, R&B and jazz group Collaboration, founded by drummer Kenny Dickerson, assistant principal at Woodrow Wilson Senior High School in Northwest, and Hyattsville (Md.) Elementary School teacher and saxophonist Tracey Cutler, will be playing at Blues Alley. This event is a fund raiser for the Wilson High School Jazz Band to travel to Brazil for an international jazz competition. Tickets to the 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. are $18 + $12.50 surcharge/minimum.

Don't forget Arturo Sandoval's two shows at the Kennedy Center on Friday.
Both of those sets have long been sold-out, but those interested should contact the Kennedy Center box office because there are often last minute cancellations by season subscription holders.
Good call on Arturo. I can't wait!
