Colbert Portrait Hanging in National Portrait Gallery

The Colbert Report has been blissfully, if not nearly at full speed without its striking writers, back for a little more than a week now on Comedy Central. For three nights straight they've been running a series showing Stephen traipsing all over Washington with a portrait of himself strapped to his back, trying to convince one of the Smithsonian museums to actually hang it up. Without dwelling on how we managed to miss out on catching this spectacle up close and personal, the real news is that as of last night, Stephen Colbert was successful in his quest. The National Portrait Gallery confirmed this morning that Colbert's portrait is in fact now hanging above the bathroom on the 2nd floor, just outside of the America’s Presidents exhibit.

The first two parts of the series can be found here and here, with the third installment embedded above. The portrait will be hanging in the museum, which is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., for the next six weeks.

Who knew DC actually had a sense of humor?

Colbert rocks.

Watching it, all I could think was, "Dammit, he was here and nobody told us!" Would have loved to see him wandering about.

I'm disappointed in Flickr. I thought for sure there'd be a photo of it by now...

I'm going to have to check that out one of these days.

Kudos to Marc Pachter. Showed a really good sense of humor. Dealt with Colbert the only way a sane person can - just play it straight.

And kudos to the NPG in general for its sense of humor.

Went and say it at lunch, there was quite the crowd hanging out at the bathroom! Like other posters, its good to see official DC has a sense of humor!

Just walked across the street to check it out. There was quite a crowd there around 1 PM. Good stuff, though!

I bet it's gonna be packed this weekend, but I'm going anyway

Colbert should be President. He's awesome and really hot.

The National Portrait Gallery isn't the only art museum where Colbert has made his mark. His name even graces one of the entrances to the Louvre in Paris.

i wonder if we've ever lost any national treasures due to the museum director's apparent fondness of gambling.
