Anacostia Community Museum's Annual MLK Jr. Program Tomorrow

2008_0116_MLK.jpgThe Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum will be holding a special lecture on the environment tomorrow at 7 p.m. as part of its 23rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. program. Robert D. Bullard, the Ware Distinguished Professor of Sociology and director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University, will present his lecture, Growing Smarter: Achieving Livable Communities and Environmental Justice Twenty-Five Years After Warren County, at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History Baird Auditorium, 10th St. and Constitution Ave., NW.

Bullard has written 15 books on sustainable development, environmental justice, urban land use, industrial facility development, community reinvestment, housing, transportation, climate justice, emergency response, smart growth and regional equity. He is also currently writing a book on the government’s role and response during the Hurricane Katrina disaster and its impact on the black community.

In July 2007, Bullard was the focus of the CNN report People You Should Know —Bullard: Green Issue is Black and White, which examined the placement of toxic waste dumps in minority communities. His book on the subject is a standard text in the environmental justice field.

The Environmental Justice Resource Center, of which Bullard is director, is a research, policy and information organization founded in 1994. The aims of the center involve including minority and working-class communities in mainstream decision-making on environmental and health issues.

The event will also include a performance by saxophonist Merlon Devine.

Following the lecture will be a question and answer session. Three of Bullard’s books, including Growing Smarter: Achievable Livable Communities, Environmental Justice and Regional Equity and CDs by Devine will be on sale and available for signing.

Admission is free but seating is limited. To make reservations, e-mail acmrsvp [at] si.edu or call 202-633-4875.

wow, if each of those 15 books touch on all of those topics, that guy must be getting into some details.

Nice to see that there's actually a speck of color in the environmental movement and that DCist is giving some shine to events east of the river. Unfortunately I won't be able to attend, but I'll definitely add at least one of Bullard's books to my reading "to do" list.
