Music Video Premiere: Carol Bui's "Modern Dance"
Between her stellar voice, aggressive riffs and critical praise, recent Three Stars alum Carol Bui has given us plenty of reasons to pay attention. But for those who haven't yet caught on, here's another one: she's just finished a video for "Modern Dance," directed by former Let's French guitarist Maxwell Sorensen.
For a video that relies a lot on special effects, the end product is decidedly lo-fi, hearkening back to some of the cooler vintage music videos. And like any decent Metro rider, she shows the value of a good newspaper. After the jump, Bui responds to some of our initial questions about the video.
DCist: Is this the first video you've done?
Yup, my very first music video.
DCist: Why this particular song?
Well, I sent three songs to Max and let him choose, and he picked Modern Dance. I think it's the best choice anyway because it's easily the poppiest on the album!
DCist: What's the significance of all the newspaper?
Max said it best when he told me his idea for the video: "The interpretation is that we isolate ourselves through words and media and block ourselves in to the point where communication is impaired or only simulated."
DCist: How did your partnership with Maxwell Sorensen come about?
I saw his video for Greenland and thought it was genius, with the sputtering stop-motion animation and home-movie feel. I dunno, it had an intimate yet kinetic feel to it and wanted to apply that to my video. So I contacted Jamie of Greenland and asked for Max's info, and that's how we got together!
Carol Bui plays the Rock & Roll Hotel on January 17 with The Rosebuds
