DCist's January Theater Preview

2008_0103_theater.jpgThe DC theater community is starting the year off right with...no more productions of A Christmas Carol. Seriously, there's plenty to like in January, from gutsy works to brand-new musicals.

The Neo-Futurists (pictured) are back! Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind, which our critic Chris Klimek loved, makes a return engagement at Woolly Mammoth (Jan. 4).

Stick 'em up! The American Century Theater gets nostalgic for police dramas with their production of Cops (Jan. 4).

Classicists will be intrigued with the latest myth-inspired work from Shakespeare Theater, the golden fleece-driven Argonautika (Jan. 15).

Yes, they're going there. Signature Theater has a provocative new one-man show called The Tricky Part, which centers around a sexual relationship between a young boy and older man. (Jan. 29).

Also this month

  • Studio Theater hosts the Foundry Theater's production of The Brothers Size (Jan 2).
  • Rabbi Sam is a two-night engagement at Theater J (Jan 7).
  • Journeymen Theater's latest is a Spanish drama, Life's A Dream (Jan. 9).
  • Glory Days doesn't rely on Springsteen for tunes; it's a new musical being staged at Signature (Jan. 15).
  • Shaw gets some love in Rep Stage's version of Mrs. Warren's Profession (Jan. 23).
  • Cookin' At The Cookery is Metro Stage's musical about legendary blues and jazz singer Alberta Hunter (Jan. 24).
  • When a one-armed man and his one-legged son come together, you get Solas Nua's Trad (Jan. 24).
  • Synetic puts its own spin on Romeo and Juliet (Jan. 26).

Still playing
This weekend is the last one for Spamalot at the National and Shakespeare Theater's Marlowe festival, with Edward II and Tamburlaine Landless's spoof on Scientology runs until Jan. 13; WSC's modern plays in repertory, including the intriguing The House of Yes, close Jan. 13, along with Fiddler on the Roof at Olney; My Fair Lady is at the Kennedy Center through Jan. 20, when Shlemiel The First leaves Theater J; and Bethesda Theater's I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change and The Sound of Music at Toby's Dinner Theater extend into February.
