There's nothing I love better than surfing through the DCist Flickr pool for PotD and suddenly coming across a photo that makes me blurt, "Wow." Flickr user gattoraffa found this circle of trees at Georgetown University, and as lovely as I'm sure they are in the spring or fall, covered in green or red leaves, the fantastic barebones natural architecture makes for a striking design, especially in black and white.

And Now, 10-20 Inches

This photo reminds me of a story Tom Waits used to tell in concert.
Once upon a time in a forest, there were two trees. There was the Straight Tree and there was the Crooked Tree. And all day long the Straight Tree would look down at the Crooked Tree and say, "Look at you! You're crooked! Your branches are crooked, your leaves are crooked, you're probably crooked underground as well. But look at me! I'm tall! I'm straight! BUT YOU'RE CROOKED!"
And then one day...the lumberjacks came into the forest.
And they took a look around. And one of them says to the other, "Bob! Cut down all the straight trees!"
And that Crooked Tree is still there to this day, growing stronger and stranger every day.
"Wow," indeed. This is stark and cool and odd all at the same time.
I absolutely love this. The only thing I think I would like better is if it had the lamppost and the tree photoshopped out of the corners. With those out, I feel like you would have to really think about what this was before the "Aha!" moment when you realize it's trees; there'd be no reference points for perspective and "place."
