What's That You Say?

road ends signComments roundup time again! The site would be a much less interesting place without you commenters, so we provide a wrap-up of the best comments from the past week.

This week's comment of the week goes to the esteemed Monkeyrotica, who writes about green roofs:

Green roofs provide insulation, reduce energy consumption, extend the life of the roof, absorb and filter rain runoff, improve community relations, reduce a building's thermal signature and reduce the likelihood that it will be a target of terrorism, and improve your sex life.

Just kidding. There's no proof they improve community relations.

After the jump, more arguments, jokes, complaints, and the world-famous best commenter name and avatar awards.

jeffrey may not be a Redskins fan:

I hear Snyder's already hired an archaeologist to dig up another fossil to coach the team.
P.S. Fly Eagles Fly.

and dodgecitydave makes a good, if pessimistic, point

If I'm an established-but-out-of-work coach (Cowher) or an emerging assistant (Jason Garrett), there's no way I'd want to be the Redskins head coach. Keep in mind that the #1 priority of a Danny Snyder-owned team is to maximize profits. Putting a winning team on the field is secondary, at best. As a lifelong 'Skins fan it hurts me to say it, but the Baltimore and Atlanta teams are way ahead of DC in having the ownership, front office, and football philosophy that is conducive to winning.

Good debate about Landrieu here.

KR in DC makes a cogent argument about D.C. schools.

I'm always amazed by reports on this or that comparing DC to 50 states. The most recent example is this report showing that "D.C. schools are ranked 51st -- behind every single state in the country".

This is not a defense of our school system, because tragically they are awful, but why do the morons who put out these "reports" continue to compare apples to oranges? DC is a city and should be compared to cities. Just because we have this unique status doesn't mean that states are what we should be compared to and contrasted with.

It's routinely used to show how DC has the worst this and the worst that when compared to 50 states. I see this all the time and it irritates the hell out of me.

although monkeyrotica refutes that:

"Eleven city school districts were tested in 2005, including New York, Boston, Atlanta, Cleveland, Miami and Chicago, as well as the District. The Washington Post's analysis of the data shows that D.C. students ranked last or were tied for last on every measure . That is true even when poor children in the District are compared only with poor children in, say, Atlanta."

Ian makes a funny one about the new Metro car designs:

That all sounds great, provided they come to their senses and decide not to use a '96 Dodge Neon as the inspiration for the upholstery design.

and EdtheRed likes the current announcements

I will be deeply saddened if they get rid of the current system of station announcements. It's the only chance many tourists get to experience the true Wershingdon accent.

MrTinDC jokes about green roofs:

My worry is that in the case of the DC government installing a green roof, they will neglect to maintain it, mow or prune it, and it will grow into an untamed mass of weed trees with windblown CVS bags stuck in them. I'm picturing feral cat colonies and huge flocks of birds living up there, with guano encrusting the surrounding neighborhood. Or, maybe they won't water it during a drought, all the plants will die, and they'll end up with a brown roof. Let's hope DC Greenworks is in charge of upkeep, and not the District.

dellis21 likes the Metro system:

I must say, I think people in DC constantly underappreciate the Metro. It is amazing that any city operates a transit system that is so comprehensive that you don't need a car to be happy. The metro has problems, yes, but it is still an outstanding system.

Some good debate about Virginia's proposed DUI license plates.

arighteouskoz read my mind about the Dupont movie theater:

Thanks for sharing the article. The Dupont theater was a shithole, but it certainly holds a gallon of memories.

From bad dates to great premieres, it was never a pleasure to be quite so uncomfortable.
(he added he meant always a pleasure)

and ontarioroader makes a funny:

I thought there was some sort of City Council mandate that all old movie theaters be turned into CVS's?
