What's That You Say?

Fine contributions this past week, fellow DCist-ites. Let’s get down to brass tacks, shall we?

Sometimes you get passed some manna from heaven. And in this case, it doesn’t get much better than the comments regarding the story of D.C. officials who were fired for perusing porn. Congratulations to our own edenman, 16th and Irving, and Jeffrey for the first Co-Comments of the Week Award. Your respective one-liners were far too difficult to choose between:

Your DC tax dollars: "hard" at work.

Stroke of genius, Fenty.

Sorry. I'm on the wrong website. Anyone know where I can find some naked ladies?

After the jump, a collection of DCist's most beloved buzzwords - gentrification, stadiums, and yes, even hipsters.

Now, this is a comment thread. The writer, frequent commenters, and others provide their thoughts into the Navy Yard parking situation and stadium development prospects.

Any time “gentrification” pops up, we can count on you guys for something heated.

OldPosterKnownAsCranky asks a basic - but unanswered - question:

Here's a wacky idea on public housing: Why don't we sell it to the residents who live in it? Granted not all could buy in. But wouldn't it make it easier on the city's finances AND help residents build up some equity if we stopped playing crappy landlord and just sold them the properties?

and hillrat answers, at least partially:

If only it were that simple. Over the last four years I've been leading a tenant-sponsored condo conversion and it's an uphill battle every step of the way. I can't even imagine trying to do something like that when a significant portion of the families were on public assistance. Unless you had a truckload of money that someone never expected to get back, I would say it would be pretty close to impossible.

But Hillman believes we might be missing the film’s selling point:

20 comments? That's the best we can do? The damn thing is called "Chocolate City" for Chrissakes.

Take sides, because everyone else has.

DC1974 knows that the Dulles rail project’s failings are no surprise, but yet just another way we’re falling behind other metropolitan areas:

If you just look at the time since the 1980s in planning this, Houston and Dallas and San Jose have built light rail systems. The entire state of New Jersey also connected itself with a light rail system. Los Angeles built a subway system. San Francisco extended their subway to the airport in one direction and out to BFE (also known as Concord, CA) in the other and built a light rail line to the Southeast part of the city and have started work (and received federal money for) a central subway. There are countless other transit projects in every other state, all funded with DoT money.

So, what is it about canned beer that makes people immediately think about hipsters? The world may never know.

IMGoph plans his own version of the school walkout protest:

just wanted to let you all know:

i am hereby planning a protest of my own. i hereby declare that everyone who breathes oxygen on january 29th will be doing so in support of mayor fenty's and chancellor rhee's school closing program. for those of you who choose to breathe only argon, radon, and sulfur dioxide on that day, we will duly note that you are opposed to the program.

everyone else, welcome aboard!

Could there possibly be another stadium fracas in DC?

The day monkeyrotica takes cop lessons from Ma Kettle...

Is this the same Virginia code that says "the chief constable shall receive one pig every month and two comely lasses of virtue true," and "it is illegal to put squirrels down your pants for the purposes of gambling?"

And the awards go to: indiecognition for a long overdue best commenter name award ...

... and blubbo for his action shot of Tottenham’s Dimitir Berbatov. Enjoy him while he’s still there, Spurs supporters.
