World Bank Closed Due to Bomb Threats

2008_0118_worldbank%282%29.jpgAll of the World Bank buildings in D.C., including its headquarters near the White House, are closed today after a receiving a bomb threat.

In a statement on its web site, the World Bank said it was investigating a bomb threat received by telephone, and that the Bank is working with law enforcement officials to determine the validity of the threat.

The World Bank's main building is only about a block from White House, and the entire Bank employs approximately 8,000 people in about seven buildings in D.C. Reuters reports that the International Monetary Fund said it would be open today, but told its employees they do not have to come in.

A World Bank employee forwarded a memo to DCist which was received by all of the lender's staff. We've pasted it below the fold.

To: Bank Group HQ Staff

Subject: Washington Offices - Precautionary Closure of Bank Group Buildings

Corporate Security is investigating a bomb threat we have received over telephone on the evening of January 16 and the morning of January 17. We are working with law enforcement officials to determine the validity of the threat and necessary protective measures.

One effort that will be made is to conduct a search of all Bank Group buildings tonight, January 17. All staff based in Washington, DC are requested to vacate their offices by 9 p.m. today to enable law enforcement authorities to carry out their investigative work. This work requires that the buildings be completely empty.

As a precautionary measure, Bank Group management has decided to close all Bank Group leased and owned buildings at headquarters. Staff will not be able to access any of our buildings on Friday, January 18. This leave will automatically be counted as administrative leave and not require prior manager approval.

We anticipate that the Bank will be open and accessible on Saturday, January 19.

Please call the Bank Group's Alert Line 202 458 7669 (SNOW) for the latest updates, including alternate arrangements to our traveling staff who may need to pick up airline tickets or a passport for travel. Kiosk announcements will also be posted when and if new information is available.

The safety and security of our staff is our top priority. We will continue to communicate information immediately to you as it becomes available.

Thank you for your cooperation.
