Cupcakes Still Not Trite, Apparently
Though Georgetown Cupcake was holding off opening until Valentine's Day, their debut yesterday seemed to be missing something — cupcakes. Last night, potential customers were turned away by an apologetic sign, "We are so sorry! We have completely run out again." This was one of many times the tiny boutique bakery off M Street (right across from Quick Pita, a Hoya mainstay) had to temporarily shut down to keep up with orders. It was two years ago we were assessing the cupcake phenomenon, and apparently, the trend isn't over yet.
Given the new shop's location and our getting used to spending three-bucks-plus on a fist-sized wad of sugar and butter, they should be fine. But just a ten-minute walk away, the vets at Baked and Wired were prepared for yesterday's onslaught. Owner Teresa Velazquez baked 600 cupcakes, ranging in flavor from coconut to red velvet to chocolate with buttercream frosting. At closing time, she still had at least 30 sitting behind the glass case. A bit pricier than the $2.75 ones at Georgetown Cupcake (what a steal!), hers are $4-a-pop.
On the phone just now, Georgetown Cupcake co-owner Sophie LaMontagne promised that "everyone from yesterday has been taken care of." She and sister/co-owner Katherine Kalonis had to issue a few rainchecks and refunds, but should have enough red velvet and chocolate 'cakes to last them through this afternoon. If you can't make it out to Georgetown today, just sit back and lose yourself in their Flashy homepage. It's "like the Star Wars intro... on frosting," as one Don Rocks member pointed out.
Update: As of 5 p.m., Georgetown Cupcakes has only a few dozen cupcakes left, are sold out of most flavors, and plans to close shop early today. Although they'll reopen tomorrow with a full stock of cupcakes, best call them ahead - they do take cupcake reservations over the phone. They also hope to have their website up and running soon.

when cupcakes become trite, it's time to call this world quits.

I used to work in Georgetown for almost two years. The only thing I miss is Baked & Wired (described above). It's the best...

Cupcakes aren't a trend... they're fucking cupcakes. who doesn't like a cupcake. a syphilis infected bum covered in open sores and burn marks could hand me a cupcake and i'd probably eat it.

I just drove down today from Bethesda after a doctor's visit with my sick wife who wanted something sweet at Georgetown Cupcake. When I arrived at noon, the door was closed, with a note that said knock if you called ahead. A woman came up and knocked and the owner opened the door. I inquired as to the shortly and she said we are closed now -- even though the posted time on the wall said they should be open. I said this is the second time I have come here and you were out of product or now this time closed. She said and I quote, "We don't care". I asked her again if she means she doesn't care that customers are inconvenienced and to please repeat what she said and she repeated herself verbatim. That will be my last visit.

I like Georgetown Cupcake, but they really need to put a piece of glass over the cupcakes. As it is now they usually take cash and give change directly over the cupcakes, totally unsanitary!

They don't sell from the displays, they take from the back racks. Georgetown Cupcake is way better than Baked and Wired in appearance and taste. Bigger is not better in this case. Georgetown Cupcake is amazing and the people who work there are really friendly.

The best thing about Georgetown Cupcake is or course, THE CUPCAKES. Moist, CreamCheese Topping, Elegant and now they have these new boxes that speed up the process and enable them to arrive at their destination safer.........unless they are eaten on the way home. The next best thing about the GTCupcake is the owners. They are seen in the back of the store with icing bags gently decorating each one as though it was headed for a dignatary. You can see thier effort is worthwhile: a quality product that has been consistant due largely to the quality ingredients they insist on. The third thing I will mention before I devour my little cupcake is the staff. With a jillion people in line, many who have waited for a bit, some are sweet while some are tempermental or just plain rude, the folks behind the counter sincerely seem to try to make everyone happy; a job that is not easy when dealing with the public. When I was in line, the salesgirl saw a little boy in line with his mom and fawned all over about how cute he was and wanted to know which was his favorite, etc. Kinda gives that "aw factor" in a cupcake shop. Something's right in the world when you see this place.
