Photo of the Day: February 19, 2008

Flickr user brandonwu got up bright and early to get this image on Monday morning. Lots of "Awakening" images were in the DCist Pool this past long weekend, as it's to be dug up on Wednesday and moved to Prince George's County. EXIF here.
Don't miss out on meeting some of our local photographers at this month's meetup to be held in conjunction with the Washington DC/Metro Area Flickr Group as well as the DC Social Flickr group. Meet at Vapiano's on M Street on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. for some food, drinks, photos and fun.

Can anyone who's actually been there recommend the best way to get there without a car? I'd like to go see it after work today, and don't have a good sense of exactly where it is and how to get there.
mellbell - It's at the far end of Haines Point. If you look at it this way, the Jefferson Memorial is at one end, well the awakening is at the complete other end. It's on the point. Walking there is going to be a long walk. Closest metro might be L'Enfant Plaza, but I'm not sure on that.
Best way to get there without a car is definitely by bicycle. Head south from the Mall on 15th Street, continue past the Bureau of Printing & Engraving, then cut over to the left across 2 lanes of traffic just before you hit the Jefferson Memorial and the approaches to I-395. There may be a small brown sign indicating East Potomac Park, and at that point take the left exit and continue along the Washington Channel all the way down until you're at Hains Point.
biking or a taxi ride would probably be your best. not cheap, but given the wind today, it might be a quick way to get down there.
Poor statue. It's almost as if it knows it's going to PG County and is screaming, "DO NOT WANT!"
Did I mention that I also don't have a bike? But I like a good walk, so that's ok. Thanks for the tips.
When I went down there yesterday, I had forgotten just how far down it was. I did notice at least one taxi and at least one ZipCar, so those are options as well.
It's actually about a 15-20 minute walk from the mall. So, it's not that far of a walk. For distance think 18th and California to the butterstick prison/red panda love nest display at the Zoo without the death march up the hill through the soccer moms and doughy tourists.
If you do walk, please keep to the right. Kthxbi! Kisses!
It's a really long walk (~2 miles each way, iirc), and there is more wind out there than in the city.
I don't think it is 15-20 minutes from the mall, unless you're one of those olympic powerwalkers (you'd have to be walking 8-10 mph to make it in that time).
I'd Metro to Smithsonian or L'enfant and flag a cab. If they're not still on strike, that is.
It would be nice if there was a pedestrian bridge from the mainland to a spot closer to Hains Point, arching high enough above Washington Channel that shipping will not be hindered. A good spot would be close to the Waterfront Metro Station. But now that there isn't going to be anything there, I guess it doesn't matter. :(
I think everyone's missing the obvious fastest way without a car. Metro to Waterfront and then swim across. It's easy!

I'd suggest a zipcar or going for a nice jog because it's definitely pretty far. But, well worth it!
Thanks for PotD!
FYI to all, I was there this morning as well and they were already bringing the stuff out to fence off the sculpture. But I would assume they won't actually restrict access til tomorrow.
It's definitely quite a long walk if you don't have a car or bike, but it's now or never...
"Did I mention that I also don't have a bike?"
I have no feet and am physically incapable of lifting my arms, so I cannot walk, or hail a cab. Any other ideas?
ibc - You're welcome to bum a ride in my Radio Flyer buttwagon. I'm more than happy to do all the brick-driven rolling, but I must insist that you join me in singing sea chanteys and Gregorian chants.
ibc: Ok, I lol'ed at that, but honestly, I just like to walk (and yes, Politburo, I am kind of a powerwalker). A bike, for me, would simply collect dust, and a car is way out of my price range now and for the next several years, so walking it is.
15-20? Try a half hour, at least. In fact, I timed myself, half-walking, half-jogging, trying to escape yesterday's torrent of rain. That sucked.
just so you know i was there this around noon today and they'd already started digging. they were letting people stand around and take photos while they worked, but it was hardly picturesque. just a heads up.
crisp: It figures. Best not to wait until the last minute for these types of things. Thanks for the heads-up.
Hmm. I guess you guys all walk really slowly or have stubby legs. Then again I could also be biased in that I've typically biked to Haines Point from home in or walked to Haines Point from the mall with my long legs in my east coast big wtf you lookin' at stroll. So, I'll give in and say 20-30, but seriously more than that then you just californian strollin'.
Keep to the right. Kthxbi!
Trust me, with the sky taking a big dump on me like it did yesterday, I was not walking slowly at all.
