Transit on Thursday: Good Vibrations Edition

2008_0221_transit.jpg

We admit it. We're sometimes a little of envious of WTOP Radio's "Sprawl and Crawl" reporter, Adam Tuss. Not only did he get to tag along with Mayor Fenty while he showed New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg around the Metro system today, but he also got to hang out with Robert D. Lisle, one of the funniest Yellow line train operators around. "His voice is silky smooth as he announces station names and he is downright hilarious when he decides to tell a joke in between stops," writes Tuss. We couldn't agree more.

As the life of transit geeks go, Adam's had a pretty awesome week, and he clues us in as to the reason for Bloomberg's visit: he's helping his pal Fenty (and, for that matter, the state of Virginia by proxy) out with trying to hype the city's need for the floundering Dulles Rail project. Bloomberg is apparently trying to get similar rail projects off the ground that would reach New York City airports, and is presumably having about as much luck as our local officials in convincing the Federal Transit Administration that infrastructure investment is a good thing. Thanks for the solid, Mayor Bloomberg, though we fear your star power won't be nearly enough to save Dulles Rail at this point.

After the jump, you guessed it, more Red line delays, and did someone get hit by a Blue line train last night or not?

Was Someone Hit by a Blue Line Train Last Night?: Metro Transit Police are asking any witnesses to someone possibly having been struck by a Blue line train at the the Van Dorn Street station around 5:45 p.m. last night to call 202-962-1792. The reason? There were reports that someone was hit by a train, but after closing that station and the Franconia-Springfield station for about two hours to search for the individual, police still never found anyone.

The closures wreaked havoc on yesterday evening's Blue and Yellow line commutes, causing major delays until at least 7:45 p.m., when service was returned to its normal schedule and the stations were both opened. Metro ran shuttle buses to move passengers around the incident.

Van Ness Work to Cause More Red Line Delays: Weekend Red line passengers just can't catch a break these days. WMATA is alerting customers on the Red line to add an additional 30 minutes to their travel times over the next four consecutive weekends while they replace the switch at the Van Ness-UDC station. Faulty switches are one of the main causes of train derailments, so obviously we're glad this work is being performed, but we feel pretty bad for Red line passengers, who have had a rough go of it on the weekends for some time now. The switch work will occur from 9 p.m. on Fridays to midnight on Sundays for the next four weekends in a row.

That's great. After I waited quite a while at the Pentagon City stop with out any notification of what/when any trains were coming, causing me to miss my own birthday dinner reservation b/c no trains were heading into the city (we watched 6 or 7 mostly Blue Line heading out), they didn't even find the guy.

Oh well, I guess its all good that no one actually got maimed.

I will never ride the Red Line again. Sorry, Cleveland Park!

I'm relatively new to this town, but I have become convinced that wmata's goal is to convince everyone that they should buy a car.

Let's raise fares in the face of continuously declining quality of service!
