Local Food Vendors Announced for Nationals Stadium

20080225-benschilibowl.jpgThe Nationals have officially announced their complete lineup of food vendors that will serve the new stadium. The list of 11 pretty much runs the gamut of sporting events foodstuffs, including: Boardwalk Fries, Gifford’s Ice Cream, Red Hot and Blue, Hard Time’s Café, and Kosher Sports. Most notably on the list is Ben’s Chili Bowl, whose rumored second location at the stadium has been teasing Nats fans since December. Marc Fisher offers a great breakdown of the local pedigrees of many of the chosen vendors.

Next on the agenda: pricing and specialty beers?

On the other end of the spectrum are Tom Bridge's photos of the ballpark’s official test of all its toilets, simulating the 7th inning stretch, via DC Metblogs. We wonder why that wasn’t included in the press release?

Definitely no coincidence that the Ballpark Ben's announcement and the toilet flush test were released to the public on the same day. Either way you look at it, it's a good news; better news situation.

WOW, I always wondered what it would be like to pay $8 for a half smoke.

Boo hiss for not selecting a vendor that will sell pupusas and empanadas...maybe the reason is that no one applied (at least I hope that's the reason), but seriously, a true D.C. stadium would offer those tasty Central American delights.

No room for Cosi? This list of eateries doesn't represent the DC I feel in love with.

What about the vegetarians?

it is a well known fact that vegetarians do not like baseball, therefor no need to cater to them at all.

actually, there will be vegetarian chili at Ben's and I'm sure there will be more than just the vendors listed. So, I'd expect pizza, beer and fries as vegetarian options.

Nothing is ever good enough for you people, is it?

Pffft. Try $12 a halfsmoke. Onions extra. And they're cursed.

But you get free mustard!

(The mustard is also cursed.)

so we're going to have a stand carrying the broodwich?

hear hear to the pupusas. maybe we can get a pupusa cart on the plaza near half and N.

Why no Five Guys? Who the hell drinks coffee at a baseball game?

Yeah I'm also bummed there's no 5 Guys. It's particularly odd seeing as they are opening up franchises in every single slightly usable space between here and Utica, NY.

That is unless Potbelly's has beaten them to said slightly usable space.

HCE,

Those early April and late September games I will gladly pay $10 for a cup.

There is the 5 Guys a block east of the Navy Yard Metro, but I doubt they'd let you take it into the stadium. Even if they had a 5G at the stadium, you'd just be paying $3 extra for everything that you could buy a block away. Really, just slap on a pair of Up Against the Wall Thugee Fresh Brand x-tra baggy poopee pants and you could fit a half dozen burgers down your trousers. Now, the fries are a different thing altogether.

Cantina Marina?! Holy hell. Maybe the tequila shots will keep me warm on opening day...

The aftermath of a vegetarian Ben's Chili is not something I want to contend with in whatever bathrooms they've installed.

Dee-lish, but destructive...

I hope Dogfish Head beer is bidding.

Wow, two jokes about the bathrooms and neither of them came from monkeyrotica -- I'm truly surprised.

Forget Ben's Chili. Take the toxic mix of Gifford's Icecream and Hard Time chili, times a couple thousand baseball fans, and you're talking enough "lincoln logs" and "lazy susans" to choke even the heartiest of commodes. Here's to hoping that they've installed a ventilation system strong enough to evacuate an dirigible hangar.

especially if you get your Hard Times Texas Chili "all the way wet."

Holy cow. Apart from missing a 5 Guys this is a good list. It's almost like someone has been spying on me as I've been saying for years that the new stadium should feature good local eats like Ben's.
