Weekend Track Work Announcements, Bus Detours

2008_0229_metro.jpgWMATA didn't have its regular weekend track work information up by the time we ran yesterday's Transit on Thursday, so we're posting it below.

Red Line: The switch maintenance work at the Van Ness-UDC Metrorail station continues for the second of four weekends. Bottom line: Don't take the Red line if you can avoid it.

Blue and Orange Lines: Verizon is doing some of their regular maintenance work in the tunnels between the Smithsonian and Capitol South stations on the Blue and Orange lines, which could cause up to 20 minute delays. Also on the Blue line, maintenance work at the Morgan Boulevard station will cause delays between that station and the Largo Town Center station.

Green Line: Metro will be testing some new rail cars on the Green line on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Inbound and outbound trains will share one track between the Greenbelt and College Park stations, which could cause delays of up to 10-15 minutes.

Also note that for some strange reason Alexandria is having its St. Patrick's Day parade this Saturday, which will cause some bus route detours, and that Irving Street NW between 14th & 16th Streets will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday while construction crews hurry to finish the Target before it opens at the new DC USA complex on March 9. H buses will be detoured around the closure.

This may explain why Alexandria is having its St. Patrick's Day parade this Saturday.

"For the first time since 1940, St. Patrick's Day will fall during Holy Week, the sacred seven days preceding Easter.

Because of the overlap, liturgical rules dictate that no Mass in honor of the saint can be celebrated on Monday, March 17, according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

But a few Roman Catholic leaders are asking for even more moderation in their dioceses: They want parades and other festivities kept out of Holy Week as well."

Uhg. Will I ever be able to get to Maryland?

might need to hop on a bike, west.

why would you want to get to maryland? i assume it must be a matter of life or death.

Yeah, why bother, when you can get all the shitty neighborhood-delimitated asshattery you could ever want right here?

Jeans, I need jeans and Denim Bar in Arlington doesn't have the good shit.

ugh i hate metro weekend work.

Aren't the NY and Boston St. Paddy's Day parades still on for the 17th? Aren't those heavily Irish areas? So other Catholic bishops are being more Catholic than the bishops of NYC and Boston?

Take it from a former bagpipe band drummer, Alexandria always has their St. Patrick's Day parade obscenely early in March.

fredo is absolutely right; the Alexandria parade is always 2 weeks ahead and by the time I even think of St. Pat's day, it's usually over.
