The Golden Triangle Business Improvement District has been circulating an email warning Metro passengers of notice they received from Metro Transit Police regarding increased pickpocket activity at the Farragut North Metro station. We're publishing it here for the benefit of our readers who use that station, though really, these tips are commonsense for anyone traveling on Metro.

Subject: Note from Metro Transit Police - Beware of Pickpockets at Farragut North

Metro Transit Police have notified us that there has been an increase in pickpocketing activity at Farragut North Station. They have asked us to pass this information along to people who may use that station regularly.

According to Metro Police, pickpockets usually work in areas where there are large crowds. Many times, the victim is unaware that a crime has occurred until later. Professional pickpockets often try to blend in with the crowd and generally work in pairs. One pickpocket creates a diversion (usually by accidentally bumping into the victim) while the other pickpocket takes the wallet. The crime usually takes a split second. Some pickpockets use the information in the wallet for identity theft.

Metro's recommends that people keep their purses and backpacks closed and close to their body. In addition, Metro advises that people carry their wallet inside their coat or side trouser pocket - never in a rear trouser pocket.

The Metro website includes a broad range of tips for keeping safe against pickpockets and other crimes in the system: [PDF]. In addition, last Thursday's Washington Post includes a story about the types of crime that are most prevelant throughout the rail system, including thefts of GPS systems from cars and electronics such as IPods: (Robberies Spike 17.6% in 2007 - washingtonpost.com).

Please pass this information along to others who may find it useful.

hmmm the frotteurs and pickpockets team up. unstoppable

So far, we've got a Blue Line stabbing at Largo and pickpockets at Farragut North. Who wants to place bets on a tunnel fire trifecta?

Some pickpockets use the information in the wallet for identity theft.
OH NOES, IDENTITY THEFT!!!11!

Room for one more in that Nissan Apocalypse?

Wouldn't the coat pocket be easier to pick and the rear asspocket harder? I can feel what touches my tushy with some sensitivity but my coat pocket practically has stuff falling out of it.
