This Week In Hip-Hop
For our purposes, the definition of hip-hop will be broader than it’s typically constructed, and will include R&B, soul, certain electronic, or whatever else is deemed appropriate by the author.
TUESDAY:
Goodwill Ink is back as Flex Mathews hosts a showcase of local talent at the Velvet Lounge. Acts slated to appear include Ardamus, Matias O Din of the Revlers, Dr. Birthday, K-Beta, Watusi, Mic Canabals, Vi Cee, and God Head. 8 p.m., Free.
WEDNESDAY:
Brooklynite Maya Azucena (pictured) is a growing star on the indie soul circuit. In 2007, she released her second studio album, Junkyard Jewel, and has been picking up critical praise from outlets like Billboard magazine. She’s played D.C. before but this time she’ll bring her rich vocals to Blues Alley for two full sets. 8 and 10 p.m., $18.
THURSDAY:
The sixth edition of Beatdown will be happening at Felix. Beatdown showcases producers and their productions. Kleph Dollarz, Key Mastarz, Judah, The Unknown, and Mudd will headline in what will serve as a chance for local hip-hoppers to mix and mingle. 9 p.m., $10.
FRIDAY:
Rebirth has been in effect for a while but now the once monthly event will be a weekly Friday occurrence at Mirrors (33 New York Avenue NE). The music will remain soulful house spun by local DJs with an industry star featured on the third Friday of the month. Resident DJ Divine will be in charge tonight. 10 p.m.,
Roy Ayers is a not only a jazz legend but a musical legend. Having performed for well over 40 years, the vibraphonist has stayed relevant with help from hip-hop producers who’ve sampled his tracks as well as other discerning tastemakers. Blues Alley will be Ayers’ home from Friday through Sunday for two shows a night. 8 and 10 p.m., $35.
SATURDAY:
The Get Down dance party will feature DJs Jerome Baker III and Stereo Faith spinning hip-hop, R&B, and Club at Napoleon Bistro & Lounge. 10 p.m., Free.
