What's That You Say?

fountains.jpgSeeing as how it’s barely going to register above 30 degrees on the thermometer (that’s -1° Celsius, for our metric friends out there) today, come warm yourself with another heaping portion of the best that our reading public has to offer.

Now, I think we all want to have the wicked-cool District coffee table on display in our space. But since there’s only a few of us able to afford the price, CrappyHouseInClarendon had an alternative design suggestion - which just so happens to be our Comment of the Week:

I have a square table that looks remarkably like DC between 1790 and 1847.

And with that, a bunch of almost as good threads are just a hop, skip, and a jump away.

In case you aren’t aware, we’ve got a neat little function at the top of the site – a favorites list of the most recommended and commented posts of the week. Usually, the top posts are different, but this week, it was pretty easy to spot that one special post that would top both lists.

Honestly, a reality show?

Guess what? The next taxi strike is set for Tuesday! Coincidentally, we’ve heard that some sort of election thingie is occurring that same day. So, is this really putting a crimp in anyone’s election transportation plans?

DudeLooksLikeALady is actually looking forward to Tuesday’s taxi service interruption:

Since I don't rely on cabs and drive within DC to and from work, I actually liked the taxi strike. My morning commute had much less chaos on the roads, and much lighter traffic.

As far as cabbie paranoia that meters are the first step toward greater regulation, all I can say is about time! I am convinced that at least half the traffic problems in DC (and 90% of them in Dupont/Adams Morgan/Cleveland Park) are the result of horrendous driving/irregular stopping by DC cabbies.

The DC gov't needs to step up and create a rigorous licensing program, a rigorous oversight program, and a taxi comission that does more than just sit on its a**.

Last week’s Avatar of the Week winner (you can’t all be Tai Shan, commentees, so, upload something!) voteprime is just confused:

I'm not sure if I see the point of the strikes. Are the cab drivers hoping that citizens will be so upset with the difficulty in finding a cab that they will complain to City Council and the Mayor? Are they hoping that the Mayor will change his mind after he sees how effective the strikes are? Are they just trying to show some form of solidarity?

Because to me it just looks like the cab drivers are losing money as we move closer to what now seems inevitable.

But registrationsucks knows that voter apathy might make it all a moot point:

Who would actually care enough about voting in DC to take a cab?

Don’t forget to keep those ideas coming in for the D.C. quarter.

tigerflight chimes in with some new political terminology:

When Potomac Yard was being built (i mean the shopping center Potomac Yard) didn't the builders kinda promise Del Ray a metro stop and then do the "turn-pockets-inside-out 'oops! we don't have any money? saaaaahhhh-weeeeeeeee' move"?

For other infill station related diatribes, head on over here.

Oh, Oscar, could your lede – “Peruvian chicken in the D.C. metro area is just about as touchy a subject as it gets.” - have been any more comment-predictive?

Anyone who knows about the recent, uh, Ruby Tuesday’s trip by the Office of Tax and Revenue knows that stmove was the closest to being correct:

With my rosey glasses I can see what really happened: The servers have no fraud related data on them, they were just old outdated servers used for backing up HR logs or something, they were recycled a year or two ago by DC, maybe stuck in a closet, then picked up by some guy who thought they would make great additions to thier used dell DL380's in achieving thier dreams of the fastest porn site on the east coast. Then they realized the servers were crap and so they tossed them out with the trash.

That is the only explanation for why the labels were still on them, nobody trying to cover something up would be that stupid... would they??

No, the Einstein memorial is not made of poop. See the things that our comment sections clear up?

Controversy! Teddy has won, but it’s all a massive coverup! Hopester is our Deep Throat:

Um, Teddy DID win on Teddy bobblehead day. I have photographic evidence. They said GW won. He didn't:

Award Time!

This week's recipient of the famed Commenter Name of the Week is none other than drew in adams morgan, who, whilst carrying a rather plain name, has real pride in his neighborhood. Either that, or he just wanted to differentiate himself from the other Drews out there. In any case, good work.

And the very prestigious Avatar Award for Achievement in the Field of Avatars goes to DCGent for his representation of George Washington’s coat of arms – the stars and bars that we all hold dear in a fresh light. Classy.

Kudos to both – and keep those smart remarks coming.
