This Week in Jazz

Joel Holmes>> A regular at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge, local vocalist Heidi Martin is scaling up to Blues Alley tonight. Her band will feature DeAndre Shaifer, Kris Funn, and John Lamkin. The first set will consist mainly of standards, but the second set is going to concentrate on original material. Tickets to the 8 and 10 p.m. sets are $18 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge. Martin will also play every Tuesday in March at Bohemian Caverns. The music starts at 9:30 p.m.

>> The Danielle Eva Quartet brings its mix of jazz, blues, and bossa to Twins Jazz tomorrow. The vocalist's band will feature pianist Allyn Johnson, drummer Lenny Robinson, and bassist Michael Bowie. Call 202-234-0072 for set time and cover information.

>> Guitar genius Stanley Jordan brings his unique technique and style to Blues Alley on Thursday for the start of a 4-night stand of solo performance. Tickets to the 8 and 10 p.m. sets are $24 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Blending styles from Latin, to ska, to reggae, Nayas will drop its international groove this Friday at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. 10:30 p.m. $5

>> It's a great weekend of local music at Bohemian Caverns. On Friday, freakishly talented young pianist Joel Holmes (pictured) comes to the historic club, and busy saxophonist Lyle Link will play on Saturday. Both are members of the recently profiled Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra. Tickets to the 9 and 11 p.m. sets are $15.

Chick Corea and Gary Burton>> The Kennedy Center also marks this weekend with two nights of fine music. Trumpeter Terrell Stafford, Director of Jazz Studies at Temple University, comes to the KC Jazz Club on Friday. Tickets to the 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. sets are sold out, but it's always worth contacting the box office for cancellations. On Saturday, Chip Jackson, bassist for the likes of Elvin Jones and Billy Taylor, will lead a group featuring vocalist Annette Sandars. Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. set are sold out, but seats are available to the 9:30 p.m. show. $25

>> Under-recognized flautist Mark Weinstein brings his world rhythms to Twins Jazz on Friday and Saturday. His band will feature some of the District's best talent in pianist Jon Ozment, bassist Pepe Gonzalez, drummer Aaron Walker, and percussionist Ivan Navas. Tickets to the 9 and 11 p.m. sets are $15.

>> Our must see for the week takes place on Sunday at the University of Maryland's Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea and vibist Gary Burton (pictured) will perform as a duo in the latest installment of a collaboration that spans over 35 years. Tickets are $40, or just $7 with a valid University of Maryland student I.D. 7:30 p.m.

>> Pianist/vocalist Christopher Linman, a local mainstay and music director at the Ritz Carlton, will perform at Blues Alley on Monday along with Rick Whitehead on guitar, John Previti on bass, Barry Hart on drums and Three Stars alum Thad Wilson on trumpet. Tickets to the 8 and 10 p.m. sets are $18 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Journeyman keyboardist Brian Auger was at the forefront of jazz-rock fusion while playing with the likes of Rod Stewart, Tony Williams, Jimi Hendrix, Sonny Boy Williamson, Led Zeppelin, and Eric Burdon. He will be coming to Blues Alley on Tuesday with his band, the Oblivion Express, which features his son and daughter. Tickets to the 8 and 10 p.m. sets are $20 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

I really think the title should be changed if you're going to include blues, bossa, and fusion.

 

no, following with the DCist naming rules, we should keep calling it the Week In Jazz, but I think we should also include country music, bluegrass, and international/world music in this category.

damn I wish I was in dc this weekend. stanley jordan is the real deal holyfield...everyone should check this show out for shizzle.

 

Clarice Smith Center student ticket prices aren't just for UMD students. I've used my GMU ID to get student tickets there several times.
