D.C. Bands Head to SXSW

If you read any music blogs, or any other kind of blog really, or are in a position to receive press releases, then you are well aware that the annual South By Southwest festival is underway in Austin. The interactive and movie portions have been going on all week, but the big kahuna — the music festival — starts today. This year, a big heaping handful of D.C. bands are heading to Texas:
ApesThat's some strong representation! There are so many D.C. bands in attendance, that the Digital Freedom Campaign is actually throwing a D.C. Does TX party tomorrow. They chose local bands who each have "a unique story about how digital technology is vital to reaching new audiences and to furthering their music careers." Don't forget to mention coverage on local blogs, guys!

If you'll be at SXSW, be sure to check out some of our local talent while you're there. We asked a few of our favorite locals some questions about their upcoming journey before they packed their bags and headed out of town. After the jump, see what Jukebox the Ghost, Middle Distance Runner, These United States and Le Loup had to say about their trip to SXSW.
Have you played SXSW or any other big festivals before? What was that like?
JTG: We played CMJ, and that was excellent. But we hear South By Southwest compared to CMJ is like comparing Flag Day to Christmas. So we're pretty psyched to meet Santa Claus.
MDR: This is our first time.
TUS: Sure have – CMJ 2006 and SXSW 2007. It's a carnival. That's all there is to it. You just gotta jump in, not take yourself too seriously, know that you're nothing in the grand scheme of things, and not just tolerate that feeling but take advantage of it, really revel in it. You know, like Life. Except in Austin.
LL: We played CMJ last fall, and it was madness! Some might say too much fun... One thing we won't miss at SXSW is the traffic.
What are you looking forward to doing in Texas?
JTG: We've heard amazing things about Texas barbeque.
MDR: Talking to hot babes.
TUS: Living life! Weather! Food! Beer! Friends! Noise! Silence! The modern world! New thoughts! Old thoughts! Highways there and highways back! Deserts! Mountains! Rivers! Cities! Buildings! Questions! Answers! Laughter!
What band are you most excited to see play?
JTG: Peter and the Wolf -- Lightness is in frequent rotation in our car stereo.
MDR: Jimmy Eats World!
TUS: Karl Blau! Apes! DeVotchka! Laura Gibson! The Builders & the Butchers! Wye Oak! Johnny Flynn & the Sussex Wit! The Cotton Jones Basket Ride! And of course, but of COURSE all our pals at the DC Does TX show!
LL: Fleet Foxes, The Ruby Suns (who we're touring with after SXSW), Yeasayer, and Jukebox.

sxsw gets bigger and bigger...to bad all the corporate types are trying to take it over..
There's another awesome band down there from the DC Metro area -- ILYAIMY
If you've never seen them or heard them, you're missing out. They are folk rock, but with a sound unlike any you've heard, I'm quite sure.
Anyway, keep the DC spirit alive in Tejas!

there are just so many damn festivals now, and the old ones (sxsw, coachella, bonnaroo) keep getting bigger and bigger. i used to feel a kind of uniqueness as someone who headed off to one of to music festivals, but they're becoming so commonplace...sorry, just had to get off my version of the standard "they were cool when only i knew about them" rant
Man....that's awesome. SXSW looks like so much fun. I wish I could have gone this year.
best swsx showcase this year looks to be the swami records one. can't wait to see the night marchers in balto in a couple few weeks!
