Early Look at Navy Yard Metro Entrance
WTOP's Adam Tuss got a chance to take an early look around at the new, widened entrance to the Navy Yard Metro station this morning.
A sneak peek at the newly expanded Navy Yard Station in Southeast, which will be the main gateway to the ballpark, shows there is still work to be done. Plastic tarps still flap in the wind, power tools drill into the ground and hammers bang away.In the video, you can see some of the new street level fare gates that have been added to the west entrance, and a new escalator that seems a ways away from being operable. But Metro officials remain firm that the Navy Yard station will be ready to handle the crush of Nats fans on March 30, and that the station itself will open for business next Friday. As this video shows, however, we should also probably expect it still to be rough around the edges.

I have never seen those blue SmarTrip express fare gates... I assume they can only be used by SmarTrip holders so they don't get stuck behind people who can't figure out which direction to insert their farecard... what a FANTASTIC idea! Why don't they have them at every station??
The SmarTrip fare gates are installed at a small number of station, mostly based on percentage of SmarTrip use during the day and those with a large number of gates to spare for "regular" use.
what was up with that battalion of firefighters?
"assume they can only be used by SmarTrip holders so they don't get stuck behind people who can't figure out which direction to insert their farecard.."
Yes, now you'll get stuck behind people looking for the farecard slot.....
Regular riders who use farecards can go through the gates about as quick as SmarTrip users. It's the non-regular riders that cause problems, and they may not necessarily understand or pay attention to why certain gates are blue, etc.
