2008 D.C. Idiotarod is on Saturday

It's time once again for the D.C. Idiotarod, that time honored race of costumed drunken loons pulling shopping carts through the streets of D.C. This year's race is happening tomorrow, Saturday, March 8, at 2:30 p.m. If you haven't formed a team yet, it's technically too late, but you might just still have time to convince a group of your friends to dress up like superheroes, characters from a 1980s TV show, or professional wrestlers, and get together tomorrow to run from bar to bar with a cart in the name of charity.

Pre-registration is closed
at this point, but teams that have already completed their forms can check-in at the Front Page in Dupont Circle between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. All pre-registered teams must complete registration by 1:30 p.m., and if they don't, folks on the waiting list will be allowed to compete. Email idiotarod (at) gmail.com to find out more information about getting on the waiting list. The official rules are over here.

For the rest of us, the fun is in grabbing a spot somewhere on the race course to watch the teams roll by. There are two courses this year, a Racer course and a Leisure course, and though the courses haven't yet been revealed, they've ended up on 18th Street in Adams Morgan in the past. This year's finish line, however, is near Union Station, with an after-party planned at My Brother's Place and Hamiltons. So to guarantee you catch plenty of Idiotarod action, consider either the Dupont starting line or the finish line at the 200 Block of 2nd Street NW.

given tomorrow's weather forecast, watching drunken idiots running around might not be the most fun thing to do. hope it clears up for 'em.

Ahh, the shopping cart that has been idly sitting in my apartment hallway for the last week suddenly makes a lot more sense.

We won't be in Adams Morgan this year, but definitely be in Dupont Circle at 2:30 to see the event start!

If you take any photos - tag them on flickr with dcidiotarod08.

Thanks!

How is the concept different than H3? I thought Hashers had cornered the market on drunken racing goofiness. My charity dollars have already been committed to competitive mustache growing.

Hey DC1 - we do that do!

dcsmashed -- you assume that I read beyond the first 2 lines.

Good to see all of the bases covered! ;-)

Seems like this could also be a warm-up event for St. Patrick's Day. Forecasts call for bouts of heavy drinking with a 90% chance of vomit.

Can you assclowns do me a solid and not leave shopping carts in front of Chief Ike's for two weeks after this?

Thanks.

Can you not call us Assclowns? thats just meanspirited, Mr. whiney miserable person.

We won't be anywhere near Adams Morgan. We spent too much time and money ( from the donation to the charity) dealing with your gratuitous complaints.... despite HUNDREDS of positive messages sent to the City Council.

Instead we have federal and city permits and a community excited to have us.

have a super duper weekend.

If these motherfuckers wake me up again this year, I am going to come outside and UPSET THE SETUP with rocks and eggs

I had a hard time explaining this to my son last year. This year will be no easier. Maybe we'll just camp out in a museum until it's over.

So this is what the kickballers do in the offseason.
