Go Home Already: Spring Chicken

>> "Maryland celebrates its 300th birthday today, according to National Geographic. While Maryland may not be the cradle of presidents and generals that the mighty commonwealth of Virginia is, it did inspire The Wire. So we congratulate you, Maryland. Happy Birthday." [The Electoral Map]

apocryphal popeyes on 14th story.
morbidly obese woman enters, proceeds to order several 14 piece dinners, half dozen sides, biscuits, and a couple liters of coke. so the cashier says automatically, "for here or to go?" customer gets irate. "i cant eat ALL that food here!" says the cashier, hands on hips, head a-bobbing, "well, I DONT KNOW YOUR LIFE!"
farewell, sweet prince. may flights of spicy chickens sing thee to thy rest.
RIP, Copeland...enjoy eternity in that all-you-can-eat Super Popeye's in the sky. Thanks to your empire, I was able to grow up in Maryland without ever realizing that "Maryland Fried Chicken" was supposed to be something special. You done good Bayou!
And Re: Maryland's B-Day...how can you give VA any props in the same breath?!? At least MD never quit America to host the capitol of the Confederassuh.
I dunno what National Geographic is talking about. According to Wikipedia, Maryland was:
chartered as a colony: 1632
first settled: 1634
admitted into the union: 1788
In fact, the only significant thing pertaining to Maryland that happened in 1708 was that the state capital, which had been St. Mary's, was moved to Providence, later renamed Annapolis. Maybe the National Geographic article was supposed to say "Maryland's capital's 300th birthday"
Geez; the idea of Virginia being 400 last year, and Maryland only turning 300 this year didn't raise any flags for you people as it trickled down the blogwire?
If you read the National Geographic entry, it sounds like they're talking about Annapolis and not the state itself. The headline probably makes it sound like it's Maryland "Annapolis celebrates the founding of Maryland." If I read it correctly, both share the same birthday, but not the same date of birth.
yeah, gotta partially defend my colleagues here at NGS...it's not the most clearly worded header, but they weren't saying maryland was 300 yesterday. theelectoralmap.com said that.
NGS's article should have been more clearly worded that it was annapolis' 300th. bad copy editing, folks.
Yesterday had nothing to do with Annapolis. It was the 374th anniversary of the founding of Maryland. On March 25, 1634, Lord Baltimore sent the first settlers to Maryland where they settled in St. Mary's.
Annapolis was founded as the town of Providence in 1649. It was incorporated into the city of Annapolis on November 22, 1708.
A simple trip to Wikipedia figured this whole thing out.
Great posting about the taxicab experience. Rather amazing to hear that Leon Swain himself took the call and virtually smacked the cabbie upside the head for not wanting to take a passenger.
ME - that exact thing happened to me on Saturday evening. I ordered 22 pieces*, was all by myself, and was asked "for here or to go?".
*That Popeyes coupon that comes every few weeks in the Post's weekend coupon pages for "buy 11 pieces, get 11 free" is no joke!
yeah but whats up with the dope green petals on the stop sign...thats the second one ive seen. dc is bloomin...
I saw those petals on two Do Not Enter signs behind the Mayflower yesterday. I wanted to take a pic of them today, but they were gone. Bummer...
