This Week In Hip-Hop

For our purposes, the definition of hip-hop will be broader than it's typically constructed, and will include R&B, soul, certain electronic, or whatever else deemed appropriate by the author.

WEDNESDAY:
>> Howard alum Sy Smith is probably most recognizable to people in the States as a background singer on American Idol, but the songstress has released several albums that have created buzz for her overseas. She’ll be back in D.C. and at Bohemian Caverns for the unveiling of her latest effort, Conflict. For her two shows, Dre King and his band will provide the musical support. $12 in advance, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

>> GoodWill Ink returns to the Velvet Lounge with host and Three Stars alum Flex Mathews. Joining him for the “2008 Infinite” live mixtape show will be DJ Eurok, Head-Roc, The Package, and Mr. Free. No Cover, 9 p.m.

FRIDAY:
>> Age isn’t anything but a number and Emoni Fela is a perfect example of this adage. She’s only in high school but already regarded as one of the best MCs the District has to offer, with good reason. She’ll be performing at Mount Rainer’s Artmosphere Café along with her backing band. $10, 9 p.m.

>> The Beatdown #7 is a continuation of the production-centered showcase where beatsmiths match their wares against each other. There's a big-time roster for this edition that includes D.C.'s Kev Brown, Best Kept Secret (Craig B. and Tone B.), Anamoly, and Juno nominated producer Marco Polo. Club Five (1214 18th Street NW # B) with serve as the venue. $15, 9 p.m.

>> New York-based Si*Se's sound has been described as downtempo electronica with Latin influences. Regardless of description, the crew led by vocalist Carol C. will set a mellow mood at their Black Cat show. $18, 9 p.m.

SUNDAY:
>> We already mentioned Emoni Fela this week but we have to do it one more time. She’ll be at Takoma Station in Takoma Park with indie soul superstar Eric Roberson and D.C.’s own Grammy nominee, Raheem DeVaughn. $5, 9 p.m.

Just wanted to mention that there will be a panel discussion on the influence of hip hop on visual art at the Arlington Art Center this Friday night at 6:30 pm in conjunction with the Wreckfest@Tiffany's exhibition closing party. The center is located at 3550 Wilson Boulevard, at the Virginia Square metro station. All are welcome!

Thanks hoogrrl.

This week isn't as plentiful as those in the past for events. WMC is going on so I assume a lot of people are off to Miami.

If anyone else has an event to add, please do.

MMM panel discussions about the influence of hip hop on visual art. Rich insights about creamy, deep influence... num num num

Thanks in advance for explaining the intricacies of "inner city culture" in a way that makes sense to even the most melanin-challenged pseudo-funkateers! Can't make it, as i will be smoking some crack cocaine with my less privileged homies!

Thanks for keepin it real, and more "broadly than typically constructed" (wish i could make sh*t like this up!) for all of us who actually wouldn't steal the "columnist's" lunch money on a dare! For myself, if i thought the "author" approved of whatever i was doing tonite in the DC area, y'know, thought it was "hep" enough, i would go home and put ice on the area immediately!
