Go Home Already: Soul Searching
>> Ward 8 Council member Marion Barry plans to introduce emergency legislation next week to extend Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE across the Anacostia River into Wards 2 and 6. If passed, the measure would not require a public hearing. [City Desk]

Tough call. If I can't take the box, I'll go with the door on the left, Monty.
How about Go Home Already: Quitters never Wynn
No? Alright then.
Ok, I want to predicate my comment by saying that I am an admirer of the work of Dr. King. I think what he did was incredibly remarkable and his legacy on this country is priceless.
But I am not sure I understand the need to extend Martin Luther King Jr. Ave all the way to Raoul Wallenberg Place. Councilman Barry feels it is most important to honor the legacy of Dr. King, and I agree. Which is why I support the memorial being built in his honor. Is this really necessary? Or an attempt on a back room deal?
Some parts of this city is confusing when it comes to street names. (i.e. Florida Avenue, Harvard Street, Military Road). This plan will only add to the confusion.
Not to mention disrespecting the state of Maine.

No. NO! Well. Color me flabbergasted. Is this what you call fourth-wave feminism? Or has the feminist counter officially turned back over to zero, now? Go on, girl. You gotta get paid.
I thought there was some sort of federal law saying all state named streets had to remain state named streets.
I very much like the idea of each state having a named street in DC.
This is a cheap political ploy by Marion Barry. Lik that's a surprise. He gets to grandstand, and anyone that dares say it's a stupid idea is branded a racist and a MLK-hater.
Beyond that, it'd be ideal if each state were forced to have an 'embassy' of sorts on their named street. It'd possibly force some of these folks to take more of an interest in DC. The joy of it is they would be all throughout the city, as the state streets can be found in each quadrant.
I like your idea, Hillman. I love the state streets and would be a little annoyed if Maine Avenue's name was changed to something else, even if it is in honor of a great man. Would we have to start calling the Maine Ave Fish Market the MLK Fish Market?
At any rate, I don't see why this deserves emergency legislation. Doesn't the city have more urgent matters to attend to?
this barry plan would really only replace a half-block of maine ave.
that said, the whole thing is hare-brained.
"At any rate, I don't see why this deserves emergency legislation. Doesn't the city have more urgent matters to attend to?"
In local DC government, there is no bigger emergency than pandering and cheap exploitation.
I kind of like the idea of extending MLK if for no other reason than in most (if not all) cities I've been to, MLK is usually in the crappiest part of town.
I also like the idea of each state having an "embassy" of sorts on their street.
Most states do have an "embassy" in the form of an office in the national governors association offices down near the Capitol. And Florida has a "delegation house" across the street from the Capitol as well.
And Barry's "emergency" bill is simply timed to maximize next weekend's MLK Parade, which, if you go to its website, is basically a Marion Barry photo op event. And, as pointed out above, anyone who doesn't agree to this legislation is "disrespecting" the community, is a racist, and is a total hater.
You could create quite a sitcom about the hilarious hijinx that ensue when visitors to the Texas embassy come to visit their new digs on Texas Avenue...
Oh, the fun we'd all have.
